Debian is a Linux distribution and a Unix derivate. The installation is very easily done through the install menu which even provides online help. After the installation and configration is finished, further Software can be installed with the dselect tool which lists the precompiled Software, gives a short explanaition for each package and ensures that dependencies are resolved. deselect also configures the Software so that its ready to run. There is no roaming in configfiles needed. For Debian there are over 800 Packages precompiled and more are added every day. They range from the bare system to X11R6, Games, Networking, Programming Tools and compilers, Graphic programms and many more. Packages can also very easily be added by the user if he finds a certain Software is not precompiled for Debian.

I myself have Debian running for some month now and found it a very stable and easy to use Unix system. Everyone can install Debian on an Amiga, although I would suggest that you collect some knowledge about unix before you start using Debian seriously, because some security stuff needs insight knowledge. For a try or as a standalone system go ahead and try it out, but if something doesn't work first time (as it always will on any system) read the provided manuals first and there are lots of them.

I would say that Debian is the best choise for somebody beginning with Linux on an Amiga.
