I'm wondering if the many long years that the Amiga tribe have been
wandering in the desert have taken a toll on some of its members.
Maybe some of them were so tormented by demons in the wilderness that
they took to tattooing "The Amiga is best, FOREVER" onto their
foreheads to make sure they didn't lose touch with reality.
Now we can see the oasis - or is it a mirage ? Those hugely powerful
PC creatures - are they for real, or are they another heat-induced
hallucination ? The only thing we know for certain, the only piece of
sanity we can hold onto is the mantra "The Amiga is best, The Amiga is
best" which makes even powerful PC-demons go away.
It may be hard for those who went really deep into the wilderness to
adjust to the bright lights of the modern technology that has been
developed whilst they were away. It may be difficult for them to see
things in a balanced way. To really understand something you have to
go and embrace it, not throw stones at it from a distance.
Are you with me, Shawn ? Maybe it's time to stop beating the Amiga
bible against your forehead, and take a look around. The Amiga is
being re-invented, so things are going to change. It's being
re-invented based on the original principles behind the Amiga, rather
than what the Amiga was 10 years ago. You can't be 5 years ahead of
your time using a 15-year-old design. Relax a little, trust a little
more, and help to shape the new Amiga, which if we're lucky will be as
big a step into the future as the original Amiga was all those years
ago.
By the way, I've been wandering too, but apart from the Amiga tribe.
I kept seeing things I really liked, here and there: anti-aliased text
on the Archimedies, the Amiga OO multi-tasking kernel, the ARM
processor machine-code, blindingly fast PC text-modes, Amiga
mod-trackers, the free software movement, the Java language, and so
on. The more good bits the new Amiga can borrow from other places,
the better. Makes sense ?
