Formerly, rechargeable Nickel-Cadmium batteries were used in computers. These can
apparently leak after a couple of years - didn't happen to me, but since it's
only a small operation, it may still be worth doing if you still have an older
box around. Just buy a well-encapsulated Lithium battery with long enough end
stripes or even wires going from it, or a normal wrist-watch battery and a
battery holder that fits well, of the same voltage as required for your computer
(should mostly be printed on the battery you alreay have), and then check which
end of the installed one is plus and which is minus, then cut that battery out
while leaving long enough connectors from the board to clip or solder the new one
to, and then install the new one, as mentioned either with a soldering iron or
with a pair of crocodile clip cables. Make sure the new battery holder is fixed
somewhere, maybe screwed to the case or fixed carefully to the case with strong
sticky tape, so it doesn't bump around and knock other pieces off when you move
the machine around a bit.
