Few weeks ago c't (www.heise.de/ct , still not publishing in English except the
occasional few articles) ran a test of many of the SDRAM sticks available, with
rather horrible results concerning especially (im)properly configured SPD-EEPROMs
or whatever .. the thingy used to tell most mainboards other than AMD Athlon
family what speeds the RAM can do. All of a sudden, "brand name" stuff became
popular where the week before you'd just find a price and the dealer not even
knowing the actual maker and the DIMMs' CAS latencies etc. . Whoops.

As what concerns the issue, I bought my most recent RAMs from my local dealer,
and found the stuff to be even cheaper than the 'net and magazine mail order
listings. And I have a human interface, read: an ass to kick within the distance
of an extended leg, should complaint be warranted (wasn't - and I even ran a
checker). Those peeps in the shop 'round the corner are not the worst to know.
