NT4 with Service Pack 6 is OK. Win2K needs another service pack or two
before it can be truly stable. I have Visual Studio 6 installed along with
Win2K, and I seem to spend an awful lot of time trapping errors thrown up by
programs doing legitimate things that the OS doesn't like. I might also add
that a lot of these programs are Mega$haft's own!
Before anyone questions my credentials on this subject, I should point out,
that in 20 years of using and abusing computers, I consider the Windows
family to be amongst the more unstable of operating systems along with the
first versions of TOS and Kickstart 1.1. These became relatively stable by
the second or third revision whereas Windoze is still dependent on hardware
configuration and processor speed. I should also point out that this is a
personal opinion based on regular day-to-day use.
My 1.3 A500 will crash on average, once or twice a day. For Windows
98/ME/2000, this is likely to be at least once or twice an hour.
This is all I have to say on the subject, and I wish we could go back to
discussing **proper** computer systems.
This mail was composed on a PeeCee. It crashed, the first time I tried to
