Hi,
Recently I discovered some advice that may save some Amiga 3000 owners
some money, a lot of money probably.... I inadvertedly discovered this when
replacing my A3000's CIAs with those from an Amiga 500+. (I was suspicious of
one being blown) I assume that the Amiga 500 is the same, just mine in the
loft and I couldn't be bothered to get up there and dig out and check... :)
Basically as I understand it, the floppy drives in an A3000 were referred to
as
the A3010 (DD Amiga 3000 drive) and also the A3015 i believe (HD Amiga
3000 drive). Making the presumption that except for early Amigas, that used
Panasonic mechanisms i believe; Commodore used Chinnon mechanisms for
the floppy drives....
The part no. for the Amiga 3000 floppy drive is a certain FZ-354 iirc off the
top
of me head! ;) Well either way, the Amiga 500+ and very likely A500, except
early A500s, have the very same mechanism! The difference; the eject button
and a missing LED.
If you find your A3000 drive is dying and don't want to pay through the nose,
or
want to fill the vacant floppy drive bay, open up an A500 and take the floppy
drive out of that, replace the eject button if need be (say if you are replacing
a
dying 'A3010' drive), and put a LED on it. (You'll see where to do this by
looking at the A3000's A3010 drive)
Perhaps this is already known? I don't know - well either way, should say you
a
lot of money. (I know someone who paid £40 for an A3010 a year back, you
can get an A500+ for £10 easily these days! ;)
Also of note is the possibility of being able to use Power Computing's Internal
A500 XL (HD) Drive. Perhaps.
Also, you will need another mounting bracket if you intend to use your A500s
floppy drive as a second A3000 drive...
