If the number of errors is too great for the Reed-Solomon correction,
the CD player will guess any of the 16-bit numbers it can't read, using
a simple interpolation. If this is happening a lot, you would hear it as
distortion. A badly recorded CD could be near the threshold of
readability all through.
The same CD might be readable on another machine with different optics
(or just a cleaner lens).
