They weren't sued for the user making the posting. They were sued for
failing to remove it after it had been brought to their attention. It
was a newsgroup posting that was allegedly libellous. Demon were
formally requested to remove it and didn't do so.

It may be possible to bring an action against eGroups for retaining
libellous messages in the database after their removal has been
requested. By the same token, the list owner may be responsible for
defamatory material that wasn't removed.
