I will have to agree with that. I learned to program on an Acorn Electron
(remember those?), and a BBC B using BASIC. I now program in C on my amiga
(freeware stuff), and at work, COBOL and Assembler (IBM Mainframe).
The important thing is to learn the basics (Sorry about any puns here),
before going for any real Amiga-specific stuff. For example, start by
writing the standard "Hello" program, then move on to programs that count
from 1 to 10, etc. before moving on to anything serious.
If the daughter is interested enough to program for a living, then the
chances are (sorry, Amiga community) that she won't be doing any software
for Amigas, so learning about programming is more important than learning
specific languages.
If you are interested in learning to program from scratch, I cannot
recommend C, Java, etc. as the important features of those languages really
are too awkard to understand for a beginner programmer, and will discourage
any further interest.
COBOL is a pretty good language for the beginner, if you cannot get hold of
a BASIC incarnation. I believe there is an implementation on Aminet, but I
don't know what it is like.
