Subject:two IDE drives at once directly off motherboard?

Hello all,

I got a 2.5 IDE cable which will allow me to connect my original 40MB IDE
(for installing the new WB when I eventually get it - hope it fits on 40MB)
and my normal 1GB IDE drive. The 40MB is an original seagate and the 1GB is
a "refurbished" IBM OEM one.

However when they are both connected at once, the system refuses to boot.
It continually resets and I can't even get the Early Startup screen to come
up.

I also installed 3.1 ROMS at the same time I fitted both IDE drives, and
doubt the ROMS to be playing a part in this outcome.

I have disconnected the 40MB one and changed the Boot Priority of the 1GB to
value of 1 instead of 2, thinking that maybe there might be a conflict
between both boot partitions (one on each drive) having the same boot
priority. This didn't seem to help at all either.

Any other suggestions? I notice on the back (same end as IDE cable
connection), one of the drives has a "jumper" on the two pins furthest from
the IDE cable (if that makes any sense). I was told these are for Primary
(or master) and secondary (slave) drive identification. The other drive has
no such jumper, but the pins are available.

Do I need to get an IDE PowerFlyer thingy to be able to use both of these
drive together?

Regards,
Richard.
