General real World tests, like copying a directory full of files,
opening a WB window etc.

See above. I tried DiskSpeed, but don't particularly trust benchmark
tools of any kind.

I don't see why it should be. Unless you are building audio tracks from
AIFF/WAVE files on disk, building the ISO image is a far more demanding
task than spooling it to disk. It's a unique application anyway, which
is why it's best to use a separate partition for the image files, set up
for their requirements.
