The lowest one, thinks I. I've lost the manual to this CTX I've got, so I
think I selected the lowest option as a precaution. Though at one point I
think I also chose 57(?)

No GFXMode doesn't recognise the card - when I installed the driver the
option was in prefs/screenmode, amongst the PAL screenmodes :
ElboxViRGE 8-bit 300x600 (these were 2-256 colours)
ElboxViRGE 8-bit 600x800
and so on, through 15-bit, 16-bit and (IIRC) 24-bit (and these were 16k-32k
colours. Or something).
Hence my workbench screenmode of 800x600 in 16-bit.
