I`m probably about to upset Alan, which I really don`t want to do, but here
goes.
Is this the promised land Bill has been selling to us? Yet another hack. I`m
reminded of a dog of a car Victor Meldrew owned. In the end he asked to have
a new car bolted to his exising wing mirror to cure all the faults, and that
sounds about how the new transition AmigaOne is going to be.
I can`t understand why some nice clean tidy boxes (either x86 or POP) could
not be launched at the same time. This really smacks of Amiga making a
hugely expensive and complex upgrade path available for the sake of it.
Given the choice between spending £6-700 further tinkering with the delecate
ecosystem that is my A1200 or buying a new set of standard components nicely
assembled and packaged the choice seems obvious.
But it`s all academic as I`m not being offered that choice am I?
Eyetech do a wonderful job and produce some excellent solutions for classic
Amiga, but Amiga need to come up with one or two bigger names (sorry Alan)
pretty soon now. From the outset Bill has said we wont promise until we can
deliver, but he then goes on to regularly hint at the fantastic and
breathtaking partnerships that are only weeks away from being announced.
Sadly it`s all existing Amiga firms, good in one way, but very poor in
others. What happened to the Japanese gents who were kings of the asian
consumer electronics industry and had committed with such a passion to
Amiga? Where is their consumer electronics might now? Are they so committed
that components from stock could not be supplied by Q3 2001 :/
Vapourware, the lot of it :/
