I'm not really too worried about the laptop part of the query at the moment.
I probably won't get one till next summer. At the moment I hijack my
girlfriend's loverly new TFT laptop whenever she comes back from Uni.

As for the network, Ethernet is definately the way to go. We had two
Laptops hooked up together via PCMICA ethernet cards in the Cisco labs the
other day and we got some rather nice speeds out of the little buggers,
despite the fact that I made the cross-connect cable myself, and I'm
useless at wiring.
