| Subject: | Upgrade Dilemma |
Hi,
Don't know if I've spelt Dilemma right, but by the by... ;)
I have decided to sell on my PPC A1200T, and I have a good reason for this.
Firstly I'm a cash strapped student, secondly I have an A3000 which i also really
like, and thus at a decent spec the A3000 could supersede it. (ie: no need
for
two Amigas in my room anymore).
There are other reasons, but - anyway! I have a problem in chosing what to
do. I intend to sell the A1200T as I have said; but have the decision of
upgrading the A3000 or getting a PC. Over the past months, I'm afraid my
friends - I've lost interest in the new Amiga. Not faith, interest. Nothing
to do
with what Amiga are doing - but just life moving on.
As a result, I am considering either with the money I hope to make from my
A1200T to either blow it all on a PC (sorry! ;) of spend some of it on the A3000
and the rest to aid my ailing bank balance... (Too much cider, too little cash
flow ;)
I am actually veering to the side of upgrading the A3000 because I really really
like the machine (despite the CV64 3D currently refusing to work, and my
monitor giving up the ghost last night.....), and would like to add some speed
and hopefully the graphics card, when it decides to work... ;-)
Which is a better idea:
Get a 68060 card for the A3000 (I've got PPC in the 1200T, but I also saw
the
speed of a 68060 and decided, hey! 68060 is better for me) and another
Graphics card should the CV64 3D fail altogether. (One stupid thing I haven't
tried is trying it on the daughterboard all on its own)
Get a PC.
Assuming the first option is what I choose; I shall be keeping the A3000 in
its
rather nice desktop case (hell no, not going to put it in some PC tower!) so
I
need to know what 68060 cards come recommended for use in a desktop
A3000. I've read about the Cyberstorm Mk. II and III and they seem the best
to me; but I'll need someone to do the INT2 fix (I tried, and failed!) for me,
and therefore fit the card (save me the hassle!).
What A3000 68060 cards are recommended therefore; and which dealers would
be prepared to do the motherboard modification and fit it for me? (I'm too
fedup with computers to bother doing it myself now - i've just found out my
college coursework is saved on a corrupt disk....)
How much could this all cost me? I will have about £300-£350 to spend, tops.
All help appreciated. The main reason is that I want to get a nice computer
(ideally an A3000 like a bat out of hell ;) which I can browse the web, send
emails, IRC, make music, use paint packages, image process and word process
all fluidly. I have seen a 68060 A4000 in action a few months ago now, and
I
could not believe the difference between the 25MHz A3640 and CSII 68060
50MHz. (It was *shocking*!) This has made me want one in my A3
