I've always seem them as a bit of a tacky provider - Eyetacky with their DIY
bodge kits :-/ I bought one of their early towers....

Eyetech are not the only company though, Blittersoft are selling the AMiga
SDK so people who already have the hardware can get on the band wagon, many
developers will already own some sort of PC hardware so it is to be expected
splashing out on a whole new box will be low volume IMO.
