Er, there are other ways apart from using PPP over a null modem cable. In
fact, I wouldn't recommend it as there are alternatives up to the job.
If you don't have to use serial, you can use the parallel port on the Amiga
and PC - providing you can solder a few wires in the correct place. Check
out MagPLIP on an AACD or even Aminet - PLIP is the way to go if you want
any kind of decent speed. Word of warning though, MagPLIP only supports
Linux 2.0.3x, 2.1.x or 2.2.x kernels - not 2.3.x or higher.
If you have to use serial, use PLIP's sister - SLIP. It is much easier to
get going than using PPP - SLIP is specifically FOR connecting two
computers that are on a local network, where PPP is designed for remote
network access (i.e. dial-up).
There are HOWTOs on how to set up PLIP and SLIP in the usual HOWTO location
on your Linux installation (/usr/doc/HOWTO/ or whatever). MagPLIP comes
with specific Amiga and Linux documentation and takes about 5 minutes to
get going, providing you have the correct cable (it's a standard LapLink
cable (null-modem parallel) for Amiga->Linux).
Don't forget your "route"ing :)
