The original email was about transparent GIF images. These can have only up to
256 different colours defined out of a choice of 16.7 million, ie the same as
an 8-bit 256 colour AGA screen. Talk of OCS/ECS/HAM is irrelevant here!

BTW, AGA can only do 262,144 colours at a time through HAM8 as there are only
64 levels of red, green and blue to choose from in this mode (though
undoubtedly there are various software tricks which allow more).
