A MIND OF HER OWN By M.A. Boyd PROLOGUE The room was dark, except for a thin stream of light filtering in from an unseen corridor. Their voices bounced off of the metallic walls surrounding them. "Everything is in place." "Excellent.... and the empath is off of the ship?" "Yes." "Now, we wait for the pieces to fall into place...he will never know what happened..." "Are you certain this will work? He is a formidable opponent." He stepped out of the shadows, a smile forming on his lips. "Oh, it will work. You see, I know where his weakness lies..." CHAPTER ONE "CAPTAIN'S LOG: SUPPLEMENTAL: While the Enterprise is testing its new warp propulsion system, several crew members, including Counselor Troi, have taken the opportunity to take their long overdue leave. Meanwhile, we are delivering Dr. Crusher to a medical conference on Mylon III where she will be a featured lecturer. This will give us ample opportunity to test the limits of the new system." Captain Jean-Luc Picard sat at his desk in his Ready Room. He leaned back in his chair. He was enjoying this chance to relax. The system test was running smoothly and he found that, thanks to his capable crew, there really had been little for him to do for the past week. This had freed him to pursue several of his favorite activities, including reacquainting himself with some old friends in his library and horseback riding on the holodeck. But, more importantly, it had given him the leisure time to spend with a certain red-headed doctor.... He frowned when he remembered that Beverly would be leaving him...and the Enterprise...tomorrow...and she would be gone for a week. That meant a whole week of lonely breakfasts and bland dinners. A week when her chair at the conference table would be empty... He sighed. It was, indeed, an honor for Beverly to be named a featured lecturer at this symposium. It would be attended by brilliant scientists from throughout the Federation. He was not surprised that Beverly was being afforded this opportunity...he had recognized her brilliance and dedication the moment he met her...over twenty years ago. Of course, that was not all he noticed... "Riker to Captain Picard." It took Picard a moment to shake himself from his very "pleasant" fantasy... "Picard here." "There is a priority message from Starfleet coming in..." "Send it to me here, Number One." "Aye, sir. Riker out." Picard turned to his viewscreen. The Starfleet insignia was soon replaced by Admiral Nechayev. "Greetings, Admiral." The Admiral nodded. Her face was serious. "Captain Picard... how are your tests going?" "Fine, Admiral. There have been no complications." "Then the Enterprise is fit for return to full duty status?" "Yes, Admiral." "Excellent. Captain, as you are aware, for the past several months, representatives from Starfleet Command have been meeting with a handful of Cardassian military leaders concerning Cardassian..'objectives'...Only six Starfleet officers know the identity of these Cardassians...and the locations of these meetings. The information we have been provided has been invaluable to our counter-intelligence agents...many lives have been saved. The next meeting will be held eight days from now on our side of the Neutral Zone near Alitha 7. We are expecting some very important information on Cardassian infiltration plans in the Revian sector. Unfortunately, one of our agents has discovered that the Cardassians may have become aware that some of their military officers are working with the Federation. We believe that they may be setting a trap for them in the Grava system, near Trita IV. We have received reports of several Cardassian raids of trading vessels near the planet. They may be a ruse to draw our "new friends" out into the open." "How can we be of assistance, Admiral?" "You will proceed to Trita IV and investigate the raids. As it is on the Federation side of the Neutral Zone, it will not be considered unusual for Starfleet to respond to the planet's request for assistance. Counter intelligence has ensured that all normal communications concerning the raids have omitted any reference to the possibility of Cardassian involvement. Everyone considers the raiders as renegade pirates. Captain, we need to know the true nature of these raids as soon as possible...many lives depend on the secrecy of our continued meetings." "Understood, Admiral." "Good luck, Captain. Nechayev out." CHAPTER TWO Captain Picard exited the turbolift and headed down the corridor toward Dr. Crusher's quarters. The briefing with his senior staff had gone well. He had, of course, omitted the details concerning the Cardassian operatives and the secret meetings. The Enterprise was now en route to their new mission. He had, however, insisted that Dr. Crusher continue with her plans to attend the medical conference. In thirty minutes, the Enterprise would reach their closest point to Mylon III and Dr. Crusher would continue on in a shuttle for the rest of her journey. Beverly was busy with last minute packing when the door chimed. "Come in...," she called as she continued with her work. Picard stood in the doorway and watched her. She had not even looked up. He smiled. Beverly's intense concentration always amazed him. It did not matter what she was working on...saving a patient, figuring out their breakfast menu...or packing a carry-all...she was always led to her own world of thoughts... Picard wished that he could be in that world right now. "Beverly..." Beverly jumped. She had already forgotten about the door chime. "Jean-Luc...you startled me. Come in, please." Picard proceeded toward her and the door swooshed closed behind him. "I wanted to see if you needed anything..." Beverly smiled. Did her excuses to see him sound as lame as his just did? "Thank you, Jean-Luc...but I believe I have everything...I just never know what to bring to these things...there are always so many receptions and dinners...I never know what to wear..." "I'm sure that anything you wear will look...fine." Picard had almost said *wonderful.* He blushed as he realized that his eyes were wandering across the figure before him. Had she noticed? Beverly bowed her head slightly so that he could not see the wry smile on her face. She had caught the "ever in control" Captain in the act. Not that she hadn't spent many moments "scanning" his features without a tricorder... Picard cleared his throat and changed the topic. "Are you sure you want to pilot the shuttle yourself...I could assign someone to accompany you?" "No, thank you. I'm actually looking forward to having some time to myself....It will give me some time to prepare for the conference. Besides, I'm a perfectly capable shuttle pilot..." She baited him. And he bit, of course. "Beverly, I didn't mean to imply that you weren't..." "Of course you didn't," she interrupted, "that would be a mistake." "Merde," thought Picard. "She did it to me again." "Did you say something, Jean-Luc?" She tilted her head impishly. Picard raised his hands in surrender. "No...I know when I am defeated." Beverly closed her carry-all. "That should be it..." Picard crossed the room. Now he could smell the sweetness of her perfume...and the hint of spice that came from Beverly herself. It was *very* distracting. His stomach began to somersault and his heart began a journey into his throat as he placed his hand on her arm. "Beverly, it's a long trip...I just want you to be careful...I've asked Mr. LaForge to run a systems check on your shuttle to make sure everything is working properly..." He had chosen his words carefully. Beverly began to melt under the touch of his hands...the warmth in his voice.... "Thank you, Jean-Luc." She leaned forward and gently kissed his cheek. "I'm sure everything will go smoothly...." *She had to break this mood or else she would no longer be responsible for her actions*, "...except, perhaps, my lectures..." Picard reluctantly removed his hand from her as she turned away...as he did, he *accidentally* brushed his hand against her breast. He froze, like a schoolboy caught in the act. Beverly quivered at the power in his touch. She was not prepared to lose control this suddenly. Jean-Luc summoned his courage and turned her toward him...he had not realized just how close she was to him. He was not prepared to lose control so suddenly as he felt her breath on his neck. "Beverly, please hurry back..." he whispered. He leaned forward and was pleased to find that she met him half-way...as their lips joined together... What started as a tender farewell deepened as Jean-Luc slid his hands to her waist. Beverly moved her hand behind his neck. They pulled each other closer... *I can't believe this is happening....* *How important is this conference anyway?..* *This is crazy...* A million thoughts exploded and disappeared from their minds. Jean-Luc could suddenly feel the wall at his back as Beverly pressed into him. He could feel every curve of her body. He made a mental note to thank whoever had designed those form-fitting uniforms. "LaForge to Dr. Crusher..." They had been summoned back to reality. "Merde," Beverly muttered into Jean-Luc's shoulder...borrowing one of his favorite colloquialisms. They stood, frozen in time, as they regained control of their composure...and their heartbeats. "LaForge to Dr. Crusher," the comm badge repeated. Beverly reluctantly hit her comm badge, her eyes locked onto Jean-Luc's. "Crusher here." "Doctor, your shuttle is ready and we'll be at the launch point in five minutes." "Thank you. Crusher out." Jean-Luc could not take his eyes away from hers. His look told her, *We'll finish this "conversation" later.* Beverly slowly stepped back from his embrace...letting his hand linger on her waist. "I better be going," she murmured...although not very convincingly. "I'll come with you and see you off..." "I don't think that would be a very good idea, Jean-Luc..." And then she was disconnected from his touch. She quickly gathered her things, and with one last gaze over her shoulder, she headed out the door. CHAPTER THREE Dr. Crusher relaxed in the shuttle chair. Her heartbeat was finally returning to normal. It had been six hours since she left the Enterprise...eight hours to go. She had programmed the navigational controls for Mylon III...and the computer would alert her to any problems that arose. She stood up and stretched. Even though she was curious about the Enterprise's new mission, she welcomed the chance for a break from her normal duties. Her only regret was that she was not accompanied by a certain Starfleet captain....She sighed. She could still taste him on her lips. Their activities during the last week had only intensified the emptiness she felt in her heart. The lack of work, the time spent with Jean-Luc on the holodeck...and over lingering dinners...To be so close all week...yet, as usual, never get beyond that occasional "accidental" touch. She remembered each time his hand brushed her arm...when their legs met under the dinner table...each "friendly" kiss that wanted to be something more.... She remembered how each had sent a jolt through her...had electrified her skin...and awakened an incredible burning within her. Even the memories ignited her... Then to have everything explode in her quarters...only to be immediately doused by that damn comm badge...and the call to their respective duties. Beverly suddenly let loose a loud cry of frustration. She smiled sheepishly at herself...surprised at her own volume. Thank goodness she was alone and no one heard that...at least, the computer didn't acknowledge her sudden outburst. She wondered if Jean-Luc ever vented himself like this. Beverly reclined in the pilot's chair and lost herself in thought...she called to mind one particular fantasy involving Dixon Hill and the backseat of one of those twentieth century land transports. Beverly's very lucid dream was interrupted by the shuttle's alarm and the computer's voice... "Warning. Collision imminent..." Beverly jumped to attention and rapidly worked the navigational controls. She looked up at the viewscreen. There was a large vessel in her path...and it was not taking evasive action. "Computer, identify vessel..." "...Origin of vessel unknown..." As Beverly tried to hail the vessel, she was startled by a noise behind her...she spun around. She gasped as two Cardassians were beamed in before her eyes. Beverly jumped to her right and lunged for her phaser as the first Cardassian opened fire at her. The blast found the control panel instead. Phaser in hand, she dropped and rolled to one knee and returned fire. The Cardassian was almost immediately vaporized. She turned to face the second intruder and had only a split second to realize that she was too slow. The phaser blast hit her squarely in the chest and she was thrown back into the bulkhead. CHAPTER FOUR Captain Picard sat in his ready room awaiting their arrival at Trita IV. After eighteen hours, his heartbeat was finally returning to normal. He was still in shock from his *encounter* with Beverly. What had happened? Their week of leisure time together had obviously worn down his usual defenses. And now, he had at least a week to reflect on their actions...alone. *Damn!* It would have been easy for him to send regrets to Mylon III and state that Beverly was needed aboard the Enterprise for this mission...then, she would still be here...and there would have been no interruptions to the impulses he had felt throughout his body...impulses that he knew that Beverly shared. But, that would not have been fair to Beverly. She deserved the honor and recognition that had been given her in the invitation to lecture at the symposium. He was proud to have such a brilliant and dedicated chief medical officer on his ship....but that pride certainly did not fill the emptiness he had in his heart right now. He was thankful for one thing, though. Counselor Troi was at home on Betazed. Thank God that he would not have to deal with her knowing looks as he dealt with this *situation*. "Riker to Captain Picard." "Go ahead, Commander." "We are approaching Trita IV." "I'm on my way." Picard stood and tugged on his jersey. His professional demeanor returned. It was a relief to have something to do other than mull over a personal situation which he was all too aware he could not resolve at this moment. He strode out onto the bridge, which was bustling with activity. Lt. Worf immediately addressed his captain. "Sir, we have established contact with the prime minister of Trita IV." "On screen, Mr. Worf." The viewscreen quickly changed from the vista of the planet below to the face of the Tritan leader. "Prime Minister, I am Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the Federation Starship Enterprise." "Greetings, Captain Picard. I thank you for your prompt response to our request for aid." "We are pleased to be of assistance." Picard was relieved to be back in his element...his personal thoughts shelved somewhere in the back of his mind. "Captain, I have a team ready to discuss our *situation* with you at your earliest convenience." "Excellent, Prime Minister. We can beam them aboard immediately." "I will inform them. Please let me know if there is anything you or your crew need while you are our guests." "Thank you for your hospitality. I'm sure that, together, we will be able to resolve this matter expediently. Picard out." CHAPTER FIVE He sat and listened to the human screams echoing down the corridor. He smiled. It wasn't often that he was able to enjoy his work so much. He continued to listen to the "opera" that he had orchestrated for a few minutes. He stood and his smile slowly disappeared as he reminded himself that no matter how much he was enjoying this...time was short...and it was time for the next phase of his plan to begin. A Mind of Her Own By M.A. Boyd CHAPTER SIX Captain Jean-Luc Picard sat in his chair on the bridge of the Enterprise. After three very long days, it appeared that this mission was fruitless. After numerous interviews with the victims of the reported raids, there was no evidence of any Cardassian presence in this sector. The rumors that counter-intelligence had received were exactly that...rumors. Picard stood and turned to Riker. "Number One, I'll be in my Ready Room preparing my report to Starfleet... you have the bridge." "Aye, sir." Will was relieved by the impatience in the Captain's voice. Perhaps they would be able to leave this system soon. The Enterprise had been a very dull place without Deanna and Beverly. True, he did not get to spend much time alone with Deanna anymore...she had become preoccupied with Worf...but, just being near her was enough to lighten his day. And, the Captain's mood had definitely declined each hour that the good doctor was away. It was time to retrieve both of these gorgeous women and get everyone back to normal. In fact, if he had a choice, he would break Starfleet regulations and head back at Warp 9. "Commander Riker, we are receiving a subspace message from Mylon III," Worf interrupted his train of thought. "What is it, Mr. Worf?" "They are asking if Dr. Crusher is still aboard the Enterprise as she never arrived at the medical conference..." Riker quickly rose from his seat and turned toward Worf. "She should have been there four days ago!" Captain Picard was working at his computer terminal when the door chime sounded. "Come..." Riker entered the room. Picard did not like the look in his eyes. he was all too familiar with what it meant. Trouble. "What is it, Number One?" "Sir, we've just received a message from Mylon III..." "From Dr. Crusher?" "No, sir. Dr. Crusher never arrived." Picard froze. A lump was forming in his throat. "Why did they wait so long to contact us?" "Apparently they assumed that she had remained on the Enterprise... Sir, they are organizing a search party now...but their resources are limited." "Understood, Commander. I've finished my report...Contact Starfleet immediately on a secured channel and put it through to me. Be prepared to head toward Mylon III..." "Aye, sir." Riker quickly exited the Ready Room as Picard turned to his viewscreen, anxiously awaiting the connection. His mind raced. What had happened...he fought the temptation to let his imagination get the better of him....Beverly was all right. She probably just had some engine trouble along the way...but, if that was true, why hadn't she sent a message to anyone?... Damn...why did he let her take that shuttle alone? His screen came to life and he turned to give his report. Minutes later, Picard marched back onto the bridge. Riker stood as he awaited the orders that he knew would be issued. "Number One, send a message to the Prime Minister informing him of our departure and get us underway toward Mylon III, Warp 5...then I want all senior officers in the observation lounge." "Aye, sir." Picard had not waited for a response. He was already on his way to the observation lounge. He entered and the doors closed behind him. He stood by the *window* and watched the stars as they began to rapidly streak by as the Enterprise reached warp speed. He took this moment to collect his thoughts. He took a deep breath to overcome the sick feeling he had in his stomach. There was no time to place blame...He must concentrate on his new mission...locating Beverly. The doors opened behind him and the remaining members of his senior staff filed into the room. They took their places around the conference table. Picard moved to join them. "I have spoken with Starfleet and given them the results of our investigation at Trita IV. I have also informed them of the disappearance of Dr. Crusher. They have authorized us to proceed to Mylon III to coordinate the search efforts. Commander Riker, what is our ETA to the planet?" "We should arrive in 25 hours, sir." Riker's voice was impatient. it was obvious from the looks on the faces of everyone in the room that they wished they had consent to break the Warp restrictions. "Thank you, Number One. I do not want any delays. In the meantime, we are to remain in contact with Mylonian authorities." "Sir, the Mylonians have limited resources. Currently, they have only 4 medium range transports that are equipped to assist in the search." Commander Data raised his brow. "If I may make a suggestion, sir." "By all means, Mr. Data," responded Picard. "As we do not know where Dr. Crusher was lost, the most logical and time efficient course would be for the Enterprise to begin the search at the point where Dr. Crusher left the Enterprise. Our long range sensors will be able to scan any planets on her planned trajectory while the Mylonians can concentrate on the area immediately around their planet. I believe that we can narrow the search area by concentrating on the uninhabited planets in the system, or planets where there are no advanced communications systems..." Geordi sat up straight, his head spinning with ideas to help save his friend. "Yes, Data! If Dr. Crusher had landed on an inhabited planet with any subspace communications ability, they would have already contacted Mylon III for assistance. That should shorten our search time by several hours at least...." "Agreed." Picard was pleased by the enthusiasm of his staff. They were always able to find solutions in the face of long odds. It helped to diminish the pain and emptiness he was feeling. But, he remembered, these were Beverly's friends...they had to be sharing some of the same feelings that he had. He turned to Riker. "Number One, I want you to prepare rescue teams to investigate any leads we may uncover...Mr. Worf, you will assist." Riker and Worf both nodded. "Dismissed." Everyone rose and began to exit. Riker paused beside Picard as the others went back to work. He was hesitant to speak to the Captain when he could see, even through the Captain's professional exterior, how worried he really was. But Riker had worked with this man for seven years...and during that time, he had learned where the chinks in the Captain's armor were. He also knew how he would feel if it were Deanna that was missing.... "Captain,..." "What is it, Commander?" Picard answered, distracted by his own thoughts. "I'm sure that Beverly is fine.... She's the most stubborn...and the most resourceful woman I have ever met." Picard managed a smile. "Thank you, Will. She certainly is..." CHAPTER SEVEN "CAPTAIN'S LOG: SUPPLEMENTAL- After 18 hours, we have arrived at the coordinates where Dr. Crusher began her journey five days ago. The Mylonian government has informed us that their search efforts have, so far, yielded no results. We will now begin our search and will continue until we know what happened to our chief medical officer." Captain Picard sat in his chair on the bridge. Under normal circumstances, his chair was a welcome friend where he poised himself during their many exciting explorations in space. But, after seven hours of fruitless searching, he was discovering every lump and every hard surface on it. He addressed Data, for about the fourteenth time in two hours. "Mr. Data, is there anything on our sensors?" "No, sir. However, I have been studying Dr. Crusher's possible trajectory and I have compared it to our charts for this sector..." "And what have you found, Mr. Data?" "If the shuttle had some sort of systems malfunction, there are three planets that would have been within its range. One of them, Nerevia, is inhabited and has advanced communications..." "What are the other two, Mr. Data?" Picard now spoke with some hope in his voice. "The closest is Reta Alpha, a class M planet with extreme weather fluctuations. It has only a sparse population in the southern hemisphere." "And the second?" "A small class M planet known only as Alpha One...it has no known inhabitants." Picard sat in thought for a moment. *Beverly, where are you? Help me!* He wished that he still had the implants from Kesprytt...then he would be able to go to her immediately....He stood. "Mr. Data, set course for Alpha One. Commander Riker, have your away teams ready." Data immediately responded, "Aye, sir. Our ETA is thirty minutes." Will Riker turned to the Captain and examined him, hoping to see a sign of what had led to his decision to choose Alpha One... He gave the Captain a questioning glance. Picard saw the look Riker was giving him and responded so only Riker could hear, "It's a hunch, Number One." That was good enough for Riker. He trusted his captain's hunches more than he trusted most people's facts. He stood and addressed Worf. "Mr. Worf, alert the rest of the away team. have them ready to go as soon as we arrive." "Aye, sir." CHAPTER EIGHT The Enterprise slowed to impulse power as it neared Alpha One. Commander Data and Lt. Worf began to scan the planet for any sign of the missing shuttle...and Dr. Beverly Crusher. Worf looked up from his station. "Sir, we are picking up signs of debris on the planet." Picard almost leaped out of his chair. "Is it the shuttle?" "The debris is consistent with the components used in a Federation vessel, but there is no emergency beacon signal...I am scanning for life signs now." Picard held his breath. "I am picking up signs of one life form.....and they appear to be human." It took all of Jean-Luc Picard's self-control to refrain from shouting out his relief. With his eyes locked on the viewscreen, locked on the planet where he knew Beverly was, he addressed his crew, "Commander Riker, Lt. Worf...get your team down there and retrieve our chief medical officer." "Aye, sir." Riker smiled excitedly and headed for the turbolift...Worf followed closely behind. The doors to the lift closed behind them and they began their ride to Transporter Room One. "Commander, we should be cautious...we do not know Dr. Crusher's condition..." "True, Mr. Worf....but she's down there and we're bringing her home. You must learn to think positively..." The away team shimmered into existence on the surface of Alpha One: Riker, LaForge, Worf and his two security officers, and Lt. Alyssa Ogawa. Worf and his officers were poised and ready for any *complications.* Geordi began to scan the area with his tricorder. He pointed. "I'm picking up life signs to our north...just over that rise." "Excellent...Mr. Worf, let's go..." Riker motioned with his head and the team headed toward the rise. Riker was finding it hard not to break into a run, but Worf was making sure that no one was taking any unnecessary chances. Worf was just as anxious to find the Doctor. In spite of the fact that she was a human female, he was impressed by her bravery and dedication to duty. That dedication had saved his life and the lives of many of his comrades on numerous occasions. To lose her would be a tremendous blow to the Enterprise...and to him. Worf reached the top of the rise first. He cautiously looked down the other side. Parts of the shuttle were strewn about the area. The shuttle had apparently exploded and almost completely burned after impact. *For anyone to survive this....* he thought. Then he saw a leg sticking out from underneath a large piece of the shuttle's exterior hull. Worf did not wait for anyone else to see it. He broke into a run down the slope. Riker quickly followed him. Worf reached the pile of debris and with a loud growl he began to pick up the pieces, throwing them to the side. His efforts soon revealed the object of their search: Dr. Beverly Crusher. "Beverly," Riker called out as they removed the last of the debris. To everyone's surprise, and relief, Beverly's eyes fluttered open. "What took you guys so long?" she muttered. "Lt. Ogawa, over here!" Riker called out. Lt. Ogawa ran to Beverly's side and, after breathing a sigh of relief, she began to scan the Doctor with her tricorder. Beverly looked up, surprised. "Alyssa? What are you doing here... you don't normally go on away team missions? Shouldn't you be in sickbay?" Alyssa ignored her boss and continued her work. Riker smiled. "She volunteered, Beverly. And I, for one, was not going to try to refuse her request..." He turned to Alyssa. "Can we move her?" Alyssa nodded. "Amazingly, her injuries are not very severe. Her left arm is broken, she's got a deep laceration on her leg and she is suffering from dehydration...she also has a concussion, but other than that...It's miracle, considering what the shuttle looks like." Riker and LaForge exchanged glances. *This really is a miracle.* "Beverly, what happened?" Riker asked. She shook her head. "Will,...I don't remember..." "That's normal under these circumstances, sir," Alyssa interjected, putting her hand on Beverly's shoulder. "The memories will probably come back once she has recovered from the concussion." Riker nodded that he understood and would not press the issue. "Sir," Alyssa continued, "we should get her back to the Enterprise immediately, just to be safe." Riker nodded and tapped his comm badge. "Riker to Enterprise..." "Go ahead, Commander,..." Picard responded. Riker turned. He wanted Beverly to be able to hear the relief in their Captain's voice when he heard the news. "Sir, we've located the shuttle and Dr. Crusher...she is alive. Two to beam directly to sickbay from Lt. Ogawa's position." There was a slight pause and he thought he imagined *or was it real* that he heard the Captain breathe a sigh of relief. "Very good, Commander." On board the Enterprise, the tension that had been building on the bridge was immediately released. Picard turned to Data. "Mr. Data, have them transported immediately....and instruct Commander Riker to begin the recovery of the shuttle craft to Cargo Bay 2. I'll be in sickbay. You have the bridge." "Aye, sir." Picard had to make a conscious effort to slow his steps as he hurried to the turbolift, the spring returning to his steps. CHAPTER NINE He looked up from his desk as his aide entered. "Is there any news?" "Yes. The next phase of our plan has begun." Gul Madred smiled. "I hope Jean-Luc Picard enjoys the last few hours of his life...I know I will." CHAPTER TEN William Riker and Geordi LaForge examined the remains of the shuttlecraft. Geordi was scanning every piece...both with his tricorder and his VISOR. "Have you found anything, Geordi?" "No, sir. The only way we're gonna figure this out is by examining every scrap aboard the Enterprise." "And, hopefully, Dr. Crusher will remember what happened." "Yes, sir. We're ready to begin transport of the pieces back to the Enterprise." "Very good, Geordi. I'll have Data meet you in the cargo bay." "Thanks." Geordi returned to his scans. He shook his head. He was baffled. He had personally checked out the craft before Dr. Crusher left and everything was operating within normal parameters. *What the hell went wrong?* Captain Picard quickly strode into sickbay...he had been anxiously anticipating this sight. Beverly lay on a biobed with various medical staff huddled around her. He approached the bed and smiled. Beverly sensed his approach and looked up. "Welcome home, Doctor." "Thank you, Captain." She motioned to the business around her. "I never expected such a welcome!" Picard was relieved to hear her usual humor in her voice. He turned to Dr. Selar. "What is her condition, Doctor?" She spoke in her trademark Vulcan, matter-of-fact, 'why is everyone in my way?' tone: "Her arm is broken, she has a concussion, and she is suffering from dehydration and has numerous lacerations and bruises. We can mend her injuries quickly...but she will need a little time to fully recover from the concussion and dehydration...." Beverly interjected, "And...I'm starving!" Picard made a slight motion with his hand and the medical staff disappeared from around the bed. He turned to Beverly and leaned forward. "Beverly, I'm sure we can remedy that problem as soon as Dr. Selar will allow it." "Thank you, Jean-Luc. You know what I'm like when I'm hungry." He was surprised at his reaction to her grin...and her double entendre. He quickly regained his composure and changed the subject. "Can you tell me what happened? Why did you crash?" She shook her head. "I'm sorry, Jean-Luc. The last thing I remember is clearing the shuttle bay en route to Mylon III. It's probably because of the concussion and dehydration..." She rubbed her forehead. Picard winced as he noticed the large bump there and the bruise that had developed to a glorious shade of bluish green. "Don't worry. I'm sure it will come back to you. In the meantime, let Dr. Selar and your staff take care of you. And, if your doctor allows it, would you have dinner with me later,..after you are released from here?" "I'd love to, Jean-Luc." Picard slowly backed away from the table and then turned. He found Dr. Selar. "Doctor, would you please let me know if she remembers anything?" "Yes, sir." "And, doctor, notify me when she is released from sickbay." Dr. Selar raised one eyebrow, but refrained from making any comment. She merely nodded. Picard gave one last look in Beverly's direction then he headed out the door. He did not see Beverly as her smiled faded from her face. Her eyes darkened as she whispered to herself, "Thank you, Captain Picard. There isn't much time...I think dinner would be *lovely.*" No one saw it. CHAPTER ELEVEN Geordi and Data were in the cargo bay, methodically examining each and every piece of the shuttle. "I just don't understand this, Data. I can find no reason for the crash and explosion. It's almost as though someone just flew it into the ground on purpose. Have you found anything in the record banks?" "No, Geordi, I have not; however, that in itself is most interesting. Also, Lt. Doran reported that she found some unusual residue on the interior lining of the passenger compartment. We have not yet been able to identify it." "Perhaps I should take a look at it with my VISOR." Captain Picard entered the bay and interrupted their discussion. "Gentlemen, have you found the cause of the crash yet?" "No, sir. Data and I are still collecting samples from the debris. Thus far, we can find no explanation...not even a hint. Has Dr. Crusher been able to remember anything?" "No. I will be debriefing her later when she is released from sickbay. In the meantime, please advise me if you find anything." He turned to leave. "Aye, sir." They responded in unison. Geordi and Data returned to their mystery. "CAPTAIN'S LOG: SUPPLEMENTAL- Dr. Crusher is safely aboard the Enterprise once again. Commanders Data and LaForge are attempting to reconstruct the shuttle to find the cause of the crash. Thus far, they have not found any explanations. We continue to orbit Mylon III as we await the return of Counselor Troi, who will be arriving in two hours via a Federation medical frigate. In the meantime, I am preparing to *debrief* Dr. Crusher at our dinner meeting." Picard looked at the dinner table in his quarters once again. Once again, he moved the plates and tableware around, trying to find the perfect placement. He was startled by the door chime. *She's here already!* "Come..." She entered and the doors closed behind her. *Even in a simple dress, she is beautiful...* Her hair dropped casually over her shoulders. He strained to see if the bruise was still there. He was pleased to see that, thanks to her medical staff, the mark was barely visible. "Good evening, Jean-Luc. And thank you for doing all of this for me." She had noticed the meticulous table and the flickering candles. "It is my pleasure, Beverly. Shall we sit?" He took her by the arm and led her to a chair by the table. "Jean-Luc, I'm impressed." She coyly smiled. "I figured you would need a relaxing dinner..after everything you have been through." He reached across the table for her hand. She gave it to him willingly. "I must admit that the atmosphere was somewhat *lacking* down there." He smiled. It was wonderful to feel this *comfortable,* this *content* again. They ate quickly. Beverly was ravenous. *I wonder if she is this ravenous when she...* Picard shut the thought from his mind. Dinner was soon over and they retired to the sofa with a bottle of wine. Beverly took a small sip..then she slowly ran her finger around the rim of the glass. Jean-Luc shifted uncomfortably in his seat. He was not prepared for the sensations that she was causing in him. "What's wrong, Jean-Luc?" He looked in her eyes. *There was that look again!* "Nothing." He was a terrible liar. She moved closer into him. He felt her warm breath..again. *It's happening again.* Beverly placed her glass on the table before them. She guided her hand from the table onto his leg. Her fingertips moved slowly up his thigh. He lifted her head with his hand. "Beverly, I was so worried..." She cut him off with her lips. The brilliant passion that had almost consumed him earlier in his Ready Room filled his body again. Their kiss deepened as he moved his arms down her back, embracing her waist. Beverly raised her arm behind him, the glint of the metal in the soft light invisible to him. As he moved to pull her onto the floor, she quickly brought the knife down.... CHAPTER TWELVE Inside the cargo bay, Data looked up from his work. "This is most interesting, Geordi." "What is it, Data?" he replied as he moved to Data's side. "This residue discovered by Lt. Doran. I decided to run a genetic scan on it after the other scans revealed nothing." "And...?" Sometimes Data was so exasperating! "It is organic...specifically, its genetic signature is Cardassian... consistent with the residue left after a lethal phaser blast." Geordi's jaw dropped to the ground. "This would mean..." "It means we've got trouble, Data!" Deanna Troi appeared on the Enterprise transporter pad. Will and Worf were both there to greet her. Will stood by discreetly as Worf moved forward to welcome her home. After a brief embrace, Deanna turned to Will. He had already sent her a communique about Dr. Crusher's condition. "How is Beverly doing?" "She's fine, physically. She still does not remember what happened. We're hoping you can help in that area." He smiled. The air was lighter already, now that she was home. "I'll unpack and then arrange to see her..." Deanna winced and doubled over, grabbing her stomach. Worf and Will both grabbed her. "Deanna, what is wrong?" insisted Worf. She gasped. "The Captain....he's been injured in his quarters!... Hurry, Worf!" Worf never questioned Deanna's *sixth* sense. Especially when it was this strong. Leaving Deanna with Will, he broke into a run. "Worf to security...send a team to the Captain's quarters immediately!" Jean-Luc felt the cold steel enter his back, just below his right shoulder. *What was happening!* He rolled off of the couch onto the floor. Beverly shouted her frustration as she realized she had missed his heart. "Beverly, what are you doing," he cried out to her. She lunged at him again. He caught her arm and they struggled, falling over the table, shattering it. The knife was jarred from her hand by the impact. *I had no idea she was this strong!* He looked across at his desk and saw his phaser on top of it. Beverly saw it too. She sprang like a cat and leapt for the phaser. Picard's injury slowed him. "Worf to Captain Picard," his comm badge squawked. "Mr. Worf, I need assistance!" Beverly jumped at the sound of Worf's voice. He was coming. She must not be captured. She fired the phaser at Picard and missed. She ran for the door, Picard trying to pursue her. "Beverly, NO!" She fired one more blast at him as she ran out the door. Picard ducked and the blast hit the table where they had shared their dinner. He collapsed to the floor. Beverly ran down the corridor toward the shuttle bay, narrowly missing Worf as he approached the Captain's quarters with his security team. Worf barged into the room, phaser in hand. He ran to Picard. "Worf to sickbay...medical emergency in the Captain's quarters!" Picard looked up at Worf and gasped. "Beverly...Mr. Worf, don't let her leave the ship!" Worf sprang into action, grabbing two of his team, leaving two behind to guard the Captain. He did not take any time to think about the fact that it had been Dr. Crusher who had attacked the Captain. His only thought was to capture her. "Worf to security, send teams to all shuttle bays...Dr. Crusher has attacked the Captain...do not let her escape!" He ran with his team toward the closest bay. He could hear phaser fire ahead. Beverly fired at the approaching team as the shuttle bay doors closed behind her. She fired into the door control panel. *That will hold them out.* She moved toward the shuttle. Worf knew what she had done. He acted quickly. "Worf to transporter room. Beam me into Shuttle Bay 2 immediately." Worf disappeared from the corridor. He was planted directly in Beverly's path. *Damn Klingon!* She raised her phaser and fired, but Worf was too quick. He sidestepped the blast and returned fire, his phaser set on stun. Beverly was knocked back by the blast but remained on her feet. She continued forward. Worf quickly raised the setting on his phaser *This could kill her*, but she gave him no choice. He raised his phaser again...and fired. Beverly took the blast in her stomach. She was thrown back through the air. She collapsed on the floor. Worf ran to her and disarmed her. "Worf to transporter room. Two to beam directly to sickbay." Their images disappeared from the bay. A Mind of Her Own by M.A. Boyd CHAPTER THIRTEEN Jean-Luc Picard awoke to the sounds of sickbay. He began to sit up and grimaced at the stiffness in his shoulder. Then he remembered... *Beverly!* He scanned the room and his eyes came upon Worf and his security team. They were gathered at the foot of a biobed. His view was blocked by their figures...but then he caught a glimpse of something on the biobed...long red hair. He was startled by a voice. "Captain, you're awake..." It was Deanna Troi. "Yes, Counselor. Please, help me up." She grabbed his arm and helped him as he swung his legs off of the bed. "Please, be careful, Captain. The wound has been healed, but you were unconscious for quite a while." There was a slight ringing in his ears...but his need to know what had happened to Beverly gave him strength. "Deanna, what happened?" Deanna began slowly. "Worf was able to catch Dr. Crusher before she left the ship. She will be okay, sir. Dr. Selar was able to revive her after she was hit by Worf's phaser blast..." "Phaser blast?!" "Yes, sir. Unfortunately, it was necessary." "But, why did she..." "Dr. Selar ran a complete brain scan on Dr. Crusher and discovered that her brain patterns had been altered... Beverly was..." she took a breath...there was no easy way to say this... "*programmed* to kill you, Captain." "Programmed by who?" Will Riker entered the conversation. "Sir, Data and Geordi discovered evidence that Dr. Crusher was captured by Cardassians. They apparently *programmed* her and then staged the crash scene. It was all part of a plan to assassinate you." Picard bowed his head. *Gul Madred did this.* "I've been in contact with Starfleet and they are investigating the matter..." "Will,...this was the work of Gul Madred. I doubt it was a plot by the entire Cardassian government. It was personal." "But, why, sir?" Deanna stopped Will's questions with one word. "Revenge..." she whispered. Picard nodded. He looked up at Deanna. "How is Beverly?...I need to see her." Deanna put her hand on his arm. "Sir, I would not advise it. Dr. Selar has been able to erase the implanted program and has reestablished her normal brain wave patterns. Beverly does not remember her captivity...but she does remember attacking you. She needs some time to deal with all of this." "I understand, Counselor," he said quietly...and reluctantly. Picard closed his eyes and put his hand over his face. He was the loneliest man alive. CHAPTER FOURTEEN Captain Picard was thankful that activity on the bridge was returning to normal. He had fully recovered from his physical injuries, Beverly was resting in her quarters, and Counselor Troi was back on the Enterprise. In fact, Deanna was staying with Beverly, watching over her. *Maybe Deanna will be able to help Beverly deal with all of this...even if I cannot.* Dr. Selar did not know if Beverly would ever be able to remember everything that had happened to her...and, perhaps that was for the best. He knew only too well what those memories could do to her. It took all of his strength to keep from running to her...he wanted to comfort her. His thoughts were shattered by an alarm at tactical. "Mr. Worf, report!" "Sir, there is a Cardassian probe to stern....and an object has been transported into your Ready Room..." "Destroy the probe..." Worf fired phasers and the probe was immediately disintegrated. Worf and Riker ran toward the Ready Room, phasers at the ready. Worf burst into the room first. Riker spotted it first. A data card lay on the Captain's desk. He cautiously walked over and picked it up. Picard entered the room and looked to Riker. Riker held the item up for the Captain to see. "What the hell is going on?..." Picard demanded. Data walked over to Riker and gestured for the data card. "May I, sir?" Riker handed the card to him and Data examined it. "Sir, it appears to be some sort of recorded file. There is a note attached...it is addressed to you, *for your eyes only*, Captain." Picard took the disk and walked behind his desk. He prepared to enter it into his viewscreen. Worf stepped forward to protest. "Sir, I must object...this could be a trick..." Picard halted him with his hand. "Mr. Worf, I appreciate your concern; however, I don't believe this poses any threat; however, in case there are any viruses implanted in this disk...Mr. Data, please isolate my viewscreen from the rest of the ship. The rest of you are dismissed." His officers reluctantly departed, leaving Picard alone to view the recording. He inserted the disk and waited for the recording to begin. Then, an all too familiar face appeared before him on the screen. Gul Madred. "Greetings, Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Before you waste any energy, be advised that this recording is erasing itself as you view it and there is nothing you can do to stop it. That said, I come to the purpose of this message. It has been a long time since we met face to face, you and I. A lot has changed in that time. You will be happy to know that you destroyed my reputation and career. Unfortunately, as you are able to view this now, my plans for you did not work out quite the way I had hoped they would; however, I have never let that stop me before. Don't worry. This is not a bomb sent to kill you. There are other ways to an end. You see, I remember our conversations well...and I remember your...reaction...when a certain, how shall I say it, *human female* was referred to. You and the *fair* doctor share a common bond, do you not? And I want you to be able to fully exploit that commonality. Therefore, I've included a recording that I think you will find very enlightening. I know you will be...*moved*... by it, although, perhaps not as much as I was in person. Until we meet again, Picard." The picture of Gul Madred's face was replaced by the image of a very dark room...a room that looked very familiar to Picard. He shuddered...*This could not possibly be...* But, to his horror, it was. Beverly was hanging by her wrists from the ceiling. Her unclothed body was limp and covered with sweat. The only sound came from her body as she lunged for each breath. Shadows moved in the room around her. There were no questions...there was no talking at all. He saw the device on her chest. And he saw a Cardassian hand raising the controller in front of her. One sentence was uttered...the only one in the whole act..."This is for Captain Jean-Luc Picard." Then the screams began. Picard covered his ears and soon the screams were covered by his own shouts of anguish. Deanna jumped from her chair beside Beverly's bed. There was something terribly wrong.... "Riker to Troi.." Will's voice was urgent. "Go ahead.." "We need you in the Captain's Ready Room NOW!" Deanna was already on her way...running. The Captain lay on his couch, his knees bent, his hands covering his face. Will stood by the door with Deanna. They spoke in hushed tones. "We had to override the doors to get in...we found him on the floor. All he has been able to say is *Beverly, I'm sorry.* He keeps saying that over and over. I have Dr. Selar standing by with a sedative." "Will, leave me alone with him, for now. I'll call you if I need you." Will left the room. Deanna braced herself against the despair she felt coming from Picard. *What the hell was on that recording that could evoke such emotion?!* She kneeled beside him and gently placed her hand on his arm. He jumped and almost hit her as he tried to move her hand away. Deanna dodged the blow. She had seen this reaction in a handful of people...people who had experienced severe emotional and physical trauma. It reminded her of his descriptions of his experience on Celtris III. *This has to be related...only, this time, he never left the ship... so, how?* She took a risk and opened herself again to his raging emotions. She leaned on the couch as they hit her, full force. *Beverly, how could I have let this happen to you?* His emotions were so strong that she could actually hear his words. *I should have been there in your place...No! Not that device!* Deanna threw the walls back up before she too became trapped in this nightmare. She understood and she was horrified. She was devastated by the torture her two friends had endured. Tears flowed down her face as she reached out to the Captain once more...she held his head to her shoulder as he sobbed. They remained there for an hour. Finally, Picard was too exhausted to remain awake. He fell asleep in Deanna's arms. She gently placed his head on the couch. She stood, steadying herself on the arm of the couch. She wiped away her own tears and then noticed that her shoulder was soaked with Picard's sadness. Deanna wearily walked to the far side of the room and hit her comm badge. "Troi to Commander Riker..." "Riker here." "Could you come in please...alone?" The doors opened and Will entered. He took one look at the sleeping form of the Captain..then his gaze turned questioningly to Deanna. One glimpse at her made her rush over to her and hold her. Deanna hung to him, exhausted. "Will, this will take a long time...we must get them off of the Enterprise." Will nodded, stroking her hair. No matter that Deanna and Worf were now lovers...they were friends...Imzadi...she would always need him. "We'll head for the nearest starbase...immediately." "Will, I have to stay with him. Someone needs to be with Beverly. We can't leave either one of them alone right now." "Don't worry, Deanna. I will stay with Beverly." She smiled at him. "Thank you...but, before you go, I need to explain some things..." Deanna took the next few minutes to tell him what she had discovered was on the recording. Will had a difficult time as he tried not to be sick. He gave Deanna one last hug and then he left...it was more urgent to be with Beverly right now. CHAPTER FIFTEEN It had been two days and the oppressive mood still hung in the air of the Enterprise. They would reach Starbase 27 Beta in ten hours. Captain Picard and Dr. Crusher had both been relieved from duty. Riker saw to it that they were both listed as on "sick leave." Neither one of them had ventured from their cabins. Both of them had uttered very few words. They adamantly refused to talk to one another. Deanna and Will sat in her office, trying to find a way to help their friends heal. "They refuse to talk to me, Will. They have both pushed their emotions as far away as possible." "But what can we do for them...we have to do something..." "I know. If we let them leave the ship without confronting what has happened... I don't think either one of them will ever recover." "Can't we *make* them talk to one another?" "I wish we could, Will. I believe that is the key to their recovery. But, short of sedating them and throwing them in a room together....I don't know how we can accomplish it." Deanna sighed. She could feel their pain physically. Will suddenly had an idea. "Deanna, would it cause them any harm if we did that...or something like that?" "What do you mean?...." "Just answer the question, Deanna." "No, Will. I don't think so. I am sure they would never hurt one another physically. They are quiet because they each feel guilty for the pain the other endured...they feel responsible for what has happened. Maybe if they were together...they would get that guilt out into the open. I know that neither one of them blames the other for what happened...it was beyond their control. " "Then, maybe we should..." Will began. "Commander...perhaps you should have been a counselor." An hour had passed. The Enterprise had slowed its pace to Starbase 27 Beta. Will Riker had programmed the holodeck. He and Deanna went over the last details. They agreed that everything was in place. The scene was set. Now, all they needed were the actors. They proceeded as planned. Deanna went to Picard's cabin. Will went to Beverly's. At the prearranged moment, they began: "*Captain* *Beverly*, as you know, you have been relieved of duty. A treatment has been prescribed for you and it will require the use of the transporter. There is to be no argument. These are *orders* that you must follow." *But, Deanna....* *But, Will....* "No buts...transporter chief...now." The Captain and the Doctor disappeared from their cabins. CHAPTER SIXTEEN Jean-Luc rubbed his eyes as he adjusted to his surroundings. A fire crackled behind him. Its glow slowly illuminated the scene around him. He recognized this place...it was reminiscent of..*where was he*...Kesprytt. The night he and *Beverly*... He turned at the sound of leaves underfoot... Beverly was poised in protest..*Will!*... She had felt the tingle from the transporter... Now, *where was she?* She saw the fire...*Kesprytt?*... she turned and saw Jean-Luc...his back toward her. She moved toward him...and stopped as he turned at her movement. Neither of them spoke. They could not look at each other...both of their heads bowed. A million thoughts raced through their minds...thoughts of regret...of the other's pain...of rage...of past moments...of love. Beverly felt a an odd, yet familiar sensation. *What has Deanna done?* she thought. *I don't know...* They looked up at the same moment. ************************************************************************** **** Outside the holodeck, Deanna turned to Will. "It's working. Dr. Selar was unsure if the replicated chemical would be as effective when airborne...but, it is. They are linked." Deanna smiled. "What exactly is that stuff?" queried Will, smiling back at her now glowing face. "I'm not sure I should reveal it to you....but, it's a weed from the planet Zphia. It is used in religious ceremonies to enhance awareness... among other things." "By the look on your face, I'll have to try it sometime..." He turned serious. "Is it safe to leave them alone?" She smiled again. "Yes, there is no animosity between them. They want to understand..." With that, Deanna and Will walked down the corridor, to wait discreetly, elsewhere. ************************************************************************** **** They had both collapsed to the ground with the initial onslaught of emotion from the other. Jean-Luc was the first to *speak*. "Beverly, I'm so sorry..it's because of me..." *No, Jean-Luc...I was too weak...I should have resisted...* *No..you couldn't have...I know..* *Oh, Jean-Luc...how could I have forgotten...but, I almost killed you * *That wasn't you, Beverly...* *I'm so sorry you had to see it...* *I'm so sorry that he did that to you...* Their last thought was in unison... *Forgive me* The distance between them vanished. The pain and grief that each of them had been carrying alone became one as the two of them fell against one another. They clung to each other, Beverly laying her head against his chest, Jean-Luc's arms around her, for one hour...then two had passed. Then, Jean-Luc lifted his head and spoke, "Computer, ETA to Starbase 27 Beta..." "At current speed, Twelve hours and ten minutes..." "Secure holodeck doors, authorization Picard 23 Omega 45 Alpha." Beverly was now looking at his eyes. "...And send a message to Commander Riker that we are not to be disturbed. Execute now." "Doors are secure and the message has been relayed." Their conversation of thought continued once more. *Beverly,...how are you...?* *I'm fine, Jean-Luc. I was a little sore...but right now...* She smiled and moved her hand across his chest. She jumped back as an image entered her mind. *Jean-Luc! I heard that!* *I was going to say the same thing to you, Beverly...* They paused in time. Jean-Luc gently moved Beverly's face so that it was directly below his. He spoke aloud, "And now, Doctor, what are we going to do about it?" Beverly no longer smiled. She was too absorbed by her concentration on the lines in his face...lines she had caused. She intended to remove all of them. Beverly ran her hand up his back and placed it behind his neck. She pulled him down to her and began to gently kiss each line on his face. He closed his eyes and sighed. She stopped his sound with her finger on his lips. Then, slowly, deliberately, she replaced her finger with her mouth. They felt no need to rush. It would take time to recover from their deep wounds. And, they intended to take all of the time they needed. Jean-Luc slowly laid back on the ground, pulling Beverly with him. His lips never left hers. She lay on top of him, feeling each of his breaths as his chest rose, lifting her ever so slightly. His hands were in her hair, on her back. They rolled, legs entwined. Jean-Luc rested on his elbow, poised above her. He inhaled her breath...she was offering him her soul and he eagerly pulled it in. There was only one thing wrong. This ground was hard. She read his thought and, still staring in his eyes, she spoke. "Computer, create a down sleeping bag, eight feet square." A few computer beeps sounded and the bag appeared. Jean-Luc smiled and laughed at Beverly's wicked grin. *That's enough, Captain. Where were we?* She pushed him by the shoulders and they rolled again...this time, onto the soft cushion of the sleeping bag. They spent the next six hours exploring...going where no one had ever gone before. Their *link* caused them to awaken at the same moment. They were nestled in the sleeping bag, limbs tightly entwined, their bodies glistening with the glow from their activities. Their clothing was strewn all about them. The campfire still burned, thanks to Will's programming foresight. And, their fire was still ignited. Jean-Luc sat up, pulling Beverly with him, and leaned against the boulder behind him. She moved her body around him, straddling his lap. The sleeping bag fell away as she moved her hands down his legs...and back up, across his arms and chest. Their mission of exploration would continue. He searched her body with his lips...determined to find each scar...Scars that would physically fade with time...but he would be with her to ensure that he removed the pain from each one. *Jean-Luc, no one has ever....* He stilled her with his mind. *Beverly, I love you....thank you* She wiped away the tear that had formed on his cheek. Their hands then wiped away all conscious thought as the urgency returned. CHAPTER SEVENTEEN Deanna Troi had spent the last several hours in Worf's quarters. Worf usually wanted to shield Deanna from the pain she often felt from others...but this was something different. It had excited him. He had made many adjustments from his Klingon nature since beginning his relationship with Deanna. It surprised him that the gentle, yet insistent, passions she showed him had such an effect on him. He looked across the room to her as she brushed her hair, preparing to return to duty. She smiled. "I take it that all is still well with the Captain and the Doctor?" "Yes, Worf. I sense.... well, it's just wonderful!" Worf growled to himself...then he softened. *Wonderful,* he thought. While he did not want to know about the private lives of his commanding officers...it was hard to be gruff when it had such a pleasant effect on Deanna. She was glowing. Deanna walked over to him and kissed his cheek. "I'll see you later on the bridge." He smiled...or at least, it was a smile for Worf. He was interrupted by Deanna's comm badge. "Picard to Counselor Troi." "Go ahead, sir." "Please report to my quarters immediately." "Yes, sir." Worf looked puzzled. "I wonder what that is about?" She kissed him again. "I wouldn't worry. I think our Captain is back." Deanna and Will arrived at the door at the same time. Will looked at her inquiringly, "You, too?" She nodded. After announcing their arrival via the door chime, the doors opened and they entered. Picard and Dr. Crusher were sitting across from each other on the sofas. He gestured for them to sit down. Will moved beside Beverly while Deanna sat beside the Captain. "Thank you both for coming," Picard began. "We've asked you here because we want to thank you." Beverly slid her arm around Will's. He and Deanna smiled. "Sir, we're just so happy to see that you have both have recovered." Picard's face darkened. "Thank you, Deanna. Our recovery would never have occurred if you and Will had not taken such drastic measures. I hope that we will be able to go on with our duties after our visit to Starbase 27 Beta." "I'm sure you will, sir," responded Will. "And while we are there, I leave the Enterprise in your capable hands, Will. This *experience* has opened my eyes to a threat I didn't realize existed. This threat still exists. For that reason, I must ask that you keep the method of our *recovery* a secret. We will have to proceed carefully. I do not want any of us to have to go through this again." Deanna looked at Beverly and the Captain. "We understand, sir. No mention will be made in any log...or anywhere else." "Thank you, Deanna." Will and Deanna could sense that the conversation had ended. They stood, preparing to leave. Deanna kissed the Captain on the cheek and then moved across to Beverly. As she gave her friend a hug, she whispered in her ear, "Your recovery becomes you." Beverly smiled. She and Jean-Luc led their guests to the door and watched as the doors closed behind them. Jean-Luc slid his hand around Beverly's waist. It was a perfect fit on the contours of her figure. He reflected on the smile on her face. "What did Deanna say to you?" "I think...that she was giving us her *blessing*..." He turned her to face him. Beverly lifted her face and kissed him. After a moment, he pulled back slightly. "You know, what I said is true...we will have to proceed carefully..." "I know, Jean-Luc..." She shuddered slightly as memories came creeping back. Jean-Luc's grip on her tightened. He kissed away her worried look. "However, dear Doctor, we still have a little while before we arrive at the starbase....why don't we keep an eye on each other?" He arched his eyebrow. Beverly took him by the hand and led him toward the sleeping quarters.... "I'm sure it will be good practice..." EPILOGUE Gul Madred sat at his desk. His plan had been thwarted once again. But, at least he could take some satisfaction in the effects of his *special delivery.* And, there would be another time...another opportunity to finish the story with Captain Jean-Luc Picard. THE END...?
