Martina was born in Kosice, Slovakia on the 30th September 1980. Her mother Melanie, a former tennis champion herself, named her after the legendary Martina Navratilova. Sporting activities were always fun for Martina, she started skiing and playing tennis while she was only 3 years old!

By the time she was 5, tennis had become an important part of her life, and she started to enter tournaments under Melanie's coaching. At 7 years old she moved to Switzerland with her mother, who is now married to Swiss computer scientist, Andreas Zogg.

Martina won her first junior Grand Slam event at the '93 French Open, aged 12. She debuted on the WTA rankings at 399 during March 1994, and broke into the top 20 on June 12, 1995, only 15 months later.

At the Australian Open earlier this year Martina made it to the quarter finals, her best grand slam performance yet. Results since then have been up and down, though her game continues to show improvement.
