The first implementation is part of IBM's OS/2 operating system. SOM is compliant with the Object Management Group's (OMG) Common Object Request Broker Architecture. There are also extensions to SOM for distributed object oriented design, DSOM. The OS/2 WorkPlace Shell is the most famous application of SOM.
