Alcatraz Island Visitor Information
Planning a trip to Alcatraz Island.
The hours of operation vary with the season. Generally boats leave throughout the day starting at 9:30am. Alcatraz is closed on Christmas and New Year's Day.
RESERVATIONS
Advance ticket sales are recommended and are available by calling Red & White Fleet at (415) 546-2700 or in person at their ticket booth at Pier 41, Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco. There is a service charge of $2 per ticket for phone reservations. Special rates are available for groups of 15 or more. Current fares (including audio tour and service charge) are $12 - adults, $11 - senior (over 62), $7.50 - child (5-11). These rates are current as of June 3, 1995 and are subject to change with NPS approval.
SELF-GUIDED TRAIL
Enjoy the history of Alcatraz at your own pace with this map and written guide. Pick up your brochure at the dock for $0.50. For visually impaired visitors, a large print version is available upon request.
ORIENTATION VIDEO
Attend a 14-minute video presentation of the Island's 200 year history - an excellent introduction ot Alcatraz. The theatre is 50 yards up the road from the dock. For hearing impaired visitors, the first screen (nearest the bookstore) is closed-captioned.
CELLHOUSE RECORDED TOUR
Join former Alcatraz inmates and corrctional officers as they remember life on Alcatraz in this 35-minute recorded tour. Rent the tour inside the cellhouse. Available in English, Spanish, Italian, German, Japanese, and French.
RANGER-LED PROGRAMS
Outdoor ranger walks are offered highlighting military history, famous inmates, escapes, natural history and the Native American Indian Occupation. Program titles and locations are posted on the Island.
VISITOR CENTERS
The dock Ranger Station offers information about Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The cellhouse information desk, in front of the dining hall is staffed by a ranger who can answer your questions.
BOOKSTORES
Memorabilia, film, and books about the Island's rich history are available for sale at the bookstores near the dock and in the cellhouse.
