Cervine Sextet, an exhibition of paintings - the centrepiece of which depicts the six wild deer species found in the British Isles - opens at the Walter Rothschild Zoological Museum on Sunday 28 April until Sunday 12 May 1996.
Local artist Richard J Smith, spent hours sitting in various hides and high seats, studying and painting the six species of deer that live wild in the British Isles, Chinese Water Deer, Muntjac, Roe, Fallow Red and Sika. The 'sextet' is comprised of six panels depicting the deer in their natural settings together with other flora and fauna. The whole work takes the viewer through the seasons and from dusk to dawn.
Sketches and other paintings will also be on display and Richard J Smith will be demonstrating his painting techniques at the Museum on Monday 6 May between 2.00 - 5.00 pm.
The Walter Rothschild Zoological Museum, Tring is part of The Natural History Museum, London. In addition to being a unique Victorian Zoological Museum, it houses the national collection of birds. As well as its own scientific staff, the Museum is visited by ornithologists from around the world, who use the unrivalled collections for their research.
