A media resource

The Press Office exists to facilitate journalists' enquiries to the Museum, using the 300 plus research scientists and collection managers who work behind the scenes as a resource. As well as being a world class exhibition and education site, the Museum is also an international centre for systematics - the naming, describing and classification of species.

Scientific expertise

The Museum houses one of the world's largest natural history collections with over 68 million specimens of plants, animals, rocks, fossils and minerals. It is therefore well equipped to deal with most enquiries on natural history themes. The Museum has five scientific departments:

Botany
Entomology
Mineralogy
Palaeontology
Zoology

As the Museum also has one of the largest natural history libraries in the world, the Library and Information Services Department can also provide a wealth of historical information of a historical nature or deal with enquiries relating to the present day.
