The Museum uses a team of specially trained volunteers to deliver high quality guided tours for school children aged 6-11.
The Teaching Auxiliaries (guides) will encourage the children to make a number of observations, to compare or measure things and to give their own opinions about the exhibits. The tours place a strong emphasis on active participation. This leads to greater remembering and understanding, and of course is more fun! Each tour has a set of pre-determined 'Teaching Points' that the guides must cover and these are closely linked to the requirements of the National Curriculum.
We like to keep the groups small, about 9-10 children with a guide, to allow for easier observation and greater participation. School parties need to provide one responsible adult (not necessarily a teacher) to accompany each touring group.
To book a guided tour for your pupils, phone 0171-938 9090 and state your preference for an Introductory tour that looks at the way museums are organised, or a themed tour on Mammals, Fossils or Rocks. A Wildlife Garden tour will be available from late March 1996.
