The Discovery Centre aims to excite visitors interest in the natural world by encouraging them to participate actively in finding out new ideas. The emphasis is on touching, exploring and doing. This approach, together with the extensive use of natural objects, makes the Centre valuable to many groups with special needs.
Activities have been designed at child height and most are accessible to wheelchair users. Some equipment is available to assist visitors who have physical disabilities.
Special needs visitors should seek the attention of the explainers, who are more than willing to assist. An explainer who uses British Sign Language is on duty in the Centre, on the first and last Saturday of each month.
The Discovery Centre is situated in the basement area of the Museum, within easy access of lifts.
On very busy days, it may be necessary to restrict the numbers visiting the Centre at any one time.
