Discovery Centre

The Discovery Centre provides an enjoyable, informal learning environment which is suitable for a wide range of abilities.

We welcome pre-booked school groups in Years 3-6, from Monday to Friday during term-time. Sessions start at half-past the hour, from 10.30-14.30 and each session lasts 45 minutes. There is a limit of 35 pupils per session. One adult per 6/7 children is required, to ensure the group works effectively.

Our hands-on activities are designed to be enjoyed by 7-11 year olds. Each activity explores a natural history topic and is also related to the National Curriculum. Our trained explainers interact with pupils to guide observation and discussion. The extensive use of real specimens promotes tactile investigation and this also makes the Centre valuable for pupils with special needs. Some equipment is available to assist pupils with physical disabilities. An explainer who uses British Sign Language is available by arrangement, please enquire when booking.

The Discovery Centre also offers cross-curricular workshops for Years 3-6. The class is divided into small groups and pupils are encouraged to hypothesize about, and test natural phenomena, in an intimate and relaxed atmosphere. Workshops are offered during term-time, on Wednesdays and Thursdays, at 13.30. They last 45 minutes and accommodate 35 pupils.

To book a Discovery Centre session or workshop, telephone the Bookings office on 0171-938 9090, as far in advance as possible.
