Discovery Centre activities cover a range of natural history topics and are aimed at children aged between 7 and 11 years. The activities are related to the National Curriculum and have been designed for children to work on with their accompanying adults. Explainers are on hand to encourage observation and pose questions to stimulate discussion. The emphasis is on touching, doing and exploring. Visitors may stroke a python's skin or make a model flying seed. The aim is to stimulate visitors' curiosity and provide an exciting and enjoyable learning experience.
During Easter and summer holidays, the Discovery Centre organizes Scientist's Corner, when the Museum's scientists talk about their work to children in the Centre. The Centre's explainers provide a number of workshops, which range from pond-dipping to fossil casting.
Children with special needs are welcome and some equipment is available to assist children with physical disabilities. An explainer who uses British Sign Language is available on the first and last Saturday of each month.
