In this exhibition children can explore the natural world for themselves in exciting hands-on displays.
The Discovery Centre has been designed so that 7-11 year-old children can investigate each activity with an accompanying adult. Adults get involved in helping the children make the most of the Centre.
At the 'Please touch' table you can touch and talk about specimens such as a python skin or penguin's wing. Then test your wits with your fingertips to guess the 'Feely box' surprises. No peeking until you've made a thorough exploration!
Other activities give you the chance to experiment with processes that most people take for granted. In 'Flying seeds' you can cut out a seed shape and launch it into the breeze - but can you change the direction the 'seeds' spin in, or control how far they travel? Expert staff are on hand to help you with your investigations.
During the Easter and summer holidays, the Discovery Centre hosts special events such as storytelling, model-making and art activities; Museum scientists give short talks about their work.
On very busy days it may be necessary to restrict the numbers visiting the Centre at any one time.
