JIFFY LUBE 300 Provisional Results
The inaugural Jiffy Lube 300 gave south Floridians a taste of NASCAR racing
that their neighbors to the north in Daytona have enjoyed for years. It
will also give them a preview of the competition they will see again when
the SuperTrucks kick off their season, March 17, 1996.
In a spectacular finish, a lucky Dale Jarrett won the Jiffy Lube 300
under caution as race leaders Kenny Wallace, Hermie Sadler and Larry Pearson
wrecked with two to go as they battled for the lead.
In another Busch series shootout, Kenny Wallace in the RedDog Ford
Thunderbird had things in control in front of 60,000+ sun-baked NASCAR
fans until lap 192 when Kevin Lepage wrecked the Vermont Teddy Bear
Chevrolet.
With four to go, the green flag fell and Wallace took off on the
restart with Hermie Sadler, Larry Pearson and Dale Jarrett in tow.
With two to go they were three abreast on the back stretch. Wallace appeared
to have held of Sadler and Pearson, until Pearson made contact with Sadler.
Sadler then spun into Wallace and the three of them ended up making very
hard contact with the turn three retaining wall.
This opened the door for Dale Jarrett in the Hudson Technologies Ford
Thunderbird to coast to a surprise victory. The fast second day qualifier
started from the 26th position and moved carefully through the field in
the early going.
With Jarret's win, Ford clinched the Busch Manufacturers' championship
for the first time. The win is Jarrett's third of the year and 11th
of his Busch career. Previous wins came at Milwaukee and Richmond.
Jarrett was sponsored today by Hudson Technologies. Next year his primary
BGN sponsor will be Band-Aid with assistance from Hudson Technologies. His
previous colors were under the Mac Tools banner.
The 60 million dollar Homestead Motorsports Complex was the perfect setting
for the second largest purse on the Busch series, $580,000. Only the Goody's
300 at Daytona offers a larger purse. The Homestead track has received
rave reviews from most in attendance, though the jury is still out on the
pastel green concrete walls that line the track.
The Busch championship was settled at Rockingham, so Johhny Benson set out
to enjoy the limelight, soaked up sun and went out to put on a show with
nothing to lose and for the mid-portion of the race did just that.
The BGN season finale got underway with an ailing Joe Nemechek on the pole.
Nemechek has been suffering from the flu and respiratory problems. Most
drivers took a cautious approach, knowing that overdriving the relatively
flat Homestead corners would result in a visit with wall.
