Robby Gordon will execute a difficult commute Sunday
(Sept 10) to compete in the IndyCar race at Laguna Seca
and finish the day in the SCORE Tecate Trophy-Truck race
in the Laughlin Desert Challenge.

Gordon of Orange, CA., who followed in the footsteps of Rick
Mears, moving from SCORE off-road racing to Indy cars, hopes
to win both races on Sunday, even though they are 400 miles
apart. Win or lose at Monterey, Gordon has made elaborate
plans to go for a win at Laughlin.

Standing by for the end of the race at Monterey, a helicopter
will take Gordon from the paddock at Laguna Seca over the
heads of homebound commuters to the Monterey airport. There,
a private Learjet awaits. It will take Gordon to the airport,
in Bullhead City, AZ., where another helicopter is poised to
fly him out onto the course to take over his Ford truck from
his father, veteran Bob Gordon of Orange, CA., who will
start the race.

With the IndyCar race starting at 1 p.m., it should end
about 3 p.m. The Trophy-Truck race in Laughlin will start
at 4 p.m.

Robby Gordon, however, doesn't have to start the race to
win it and score points. SCORE racing rules require that the
driver of record either start or finish the race for his
points to count. The finish is critical to Gordon's run at
the championship. He is 3rd in points with only the Laughlin
Desert Challenge and the Ford Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 to go.

Currently, Ivan Stewart of Alpine, CA., leads with 223
points, and Gordon's teammate, Jim Smith is second with 165.
Gordon has 161, but could have had more, if he didn't have
a racing conflict (Milwaukee 200) that kept him out of the
Tecate SCORE Baja 500 in June.
