ROBBY GORDON: RACING ON AND OFF ROAD THIS SUNDAY
by Robert Heathcote, for SpeedNet
LAUGHLIN, Nevada (9/5/95) -- SpeedNet -- Racer Robby Gordon has
elaborate plans to race in the Grand Prix of Monterey Indy car race at
Laguna Seca Raceway this Sunday (Sept. 10) and then fly 400 miles to
Laughlin, Nev., to compete in the SCORE Tecate Desert Challenge
Trophy-Truck race later that day.
Awating the finish of the Indy car race, a helicopter will shuttle
Gordon over to the Monterey Airport where a Learjet will be standing by
to wisk him to the airport at Bullhead, City, Ariz. Then, another
helicopter will drop Gordon on course of the SCORE Tecate Desert
Challenge to take over his Ford truck from his father, veteran Bob
Gordon, who will start the race.
The Indy car race will start at 1:00pm and finish about two hours later.
The Trophy-Truck race in Laughlin will start at 4:00pm.
Robby Gordon, however, doesn't have to start the race to win it and
score points. SCORE racing rules allow the registered driver to either
start or finish the race.
Though Gordon is out of the hunt for the 1995 PPG Indy Car World Series
title, he stands a slim but mathematical chance to win the off-road
championship.
Currently, Ivan Stewart of Alpine, Calif., leads with 223 points, and
Gordon's teammate, Jim Smith is second with 165. Gordon's total of 161
is compromised by a race conflict (Milwaukee 200) that kept him out of
the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 in June.
The Trophy-Truck event is the main event to a full weekend of racing
Laughlin's 42.5-mile off-road course. Two races are scheduled for
Saturday and two more Sunday.
In addition, drivers will be competing for a unique prize fund of
$15,000, that will be paid out -- in addition to regular purse money --
based on "tape-measured distances, after they fly over a specially
constructed ramp in the spectator area," a press release noted. It's
called the "Laughlin Leap."
