JOHN GODDARD of Oakland, CA jumped into the lead in his Vallejo Nissan 240SX
at the start of Round Six of the NASPORT-West Championship Series at Willow
Springs, and he was never challenged during the 19-lap race. Goddard also
retained his third place standings in the GT-3 Driver's Championship. JOHN
OLSON of Monterey, CA did likewise in his Tarpy's/Classic Coachworks Nissan 510
for the GT-4 class and stretched his unbeatable lead even further for the
year-end Driver's Championship.
MIKE LEWIS of San Diego, CA in the Redline/Cyclo Mazda RX-7 had the pole for
the Labor Day race, and also turned the race's fastest lap, but DNF'd with
mechanical problems compounded by a flat tire. Lewis' teammate, actress MARSHA
MASON, was unable to race due to severe crash damage sustained Friday in
testing when she was rear-ended by a Spec Racer.
FRANK HONSOWETZ of El Segundo finished third overall in the race as well as in
the GT-3 class in his Creative Endeavors Nissan 240SX, after battling for
second place all race-long with DOUG BARNHOLD of Fontana, CA (Genesis
Engineering Nissan 240SX.) Honsowetz also took over the lead for the GT-3
Driver's Championship. He leads by a scant two points over JEFF SCOVILLE of
Corvallis, OR (Jack Scoville Ltd Nissan 240SX,) who was leading the points
going into this Labor Day weekend's race. Scoville had a flat tire, one of six
the NASPORT drivers experienced on the rough, rock-strewn course, causing him
to pit and finish eighth.
The GT-3 points chase is even tighter than ever now, with but six points
separating the top three contenders, any of whom could win the 1995 GT-3
Drivers' Championship at the season's finale race in October.
In the GT-4 class, RICK BERNOCCO of Thousand Oaks, CA finished second in his
Drake Engineering VW Golf in class to move up into third place in the GT-4
Driver's Championship points. Third-place race finisher, ROGER LEE of
Stockton, CA in an Opel GT, retains his second place in the GT-4 points
standings.
In the Manufacturer's Championship points, Nissan has all but clinched both
the GT-3 and the GT4 classes with a lead that can't be challenged.
The last race of the season will be October 8th at Sears Point Raceway in
Sonoma, California, where NASPORT will end its 95 season at the Subway Stock
Car Madness weekend. The SCCA Club Racing Series will run along with the new
NASCAR SuperTruck by Craftsman Series and the SCCA Trans-Am Championship
Series.
