CAMPBELL COPS SECOND ICEMAN WIN IN A ROW
TOLEDO, OH (8/13) Battle Creek, MI native Fred Campbell mastered a slick
Toledo Speedway Sunday night to take his second ICEMAN Super Car Series
win in a row and his fourth win overall.
The evening was interrupted by a short but soaking thundershower which
washed most of the rubber off the high banked half mile. That made the
outside groove virtually impassable for the first half of the race which
was led by Kenny Phillips. By about the 60 lap mark it was Campbell who
began to feel his way around the outside as he attempted to pass second
place competitor Glenn Gault. On lap 71 following a caution and on cooler
tires, Campbell made a bold move to pass Gault on the outside and quickly
worked to the outside of Phillips. Within two laps he had passed both of
them for the top spot.
With just five laps remaining the final caution of the night fell setting
up a dual to the finish between Campbell, Phillips and defending champion
Dennis Berry who had worked his way up to third. The race to the finish
never materialized though as Campbell jumped ahead on the restart and
cruised to the victory. Berry was able to pass Phillips to take second.
Tom Fedewa and Gault rounded out the top five.
Next week the series moves to the Berlin Raceway in Marne, MI for Race
#15 in the series. Also note that the Sandusky race rained out August 5
has been rescheduled for Saturday Sept. 2.
