All Star Circuit of Champions
CLUB ALL STAR SPRINT RESULTS - Fri. 7/21/95 - Eldora
Speedway Rossburg, OH - By Scott Hall
ROSSBURG, OH - Jac Haudenschild used two restarts to
pass his competitors for the lead and scored his third
Club All Star sprint win of the season Friday night at
Eldora Speedway. The win, in the Night Before The Kings
Royal feature, was worth $5,000 to the pilot of Jack
Elden's Pennzoil machine. Haudenschild finished a half-
straight ahead of runnerup Joey Saldana.
"We had more gear than anybody, that's why we were
good on the restarts." Haudenschild said. "But once we
got strung out we were done, that's why we had to do it
on the restarts.
Saldana started on the pole and led the first 17 laps
until Haudenschild flew by on a restart. "I just didn't
get a good run on the restart and he got by me," Saldana
said. "I was just lucky to run second."
Behind the two leaders was Jeff Swindell, who shared
the front row with Saldana on the start. Dale Blaney
started 17th and ran fourth with Jimmy Hawley fifth, up
from 14th, in Amy Shoup's Avenger.
"We just had plenty of problems tonight," Swindell
said afterward. "We couldn't get the motor to run, it
just stumbled all over itself taking off and didn't want
to come off the corner very good. That left the door
open for Jac to get around on that restart."
With Saldana leading at the start, Swindell followed
in second with fourth starting Haudenschild third.
Stevie Smith ran fourth in the Ecowater machine,
followed by Johnny Herrera and Kerry Madsen.
On lap 11, Madsen had his front wing become loose and
fold over up on his hood. But the Australian driver did
not slow down. Then, on lap 14, the wing totally flew
off, sending Madsen head-on full bore into the turn
three wall. Madsen was not injured in the crash.
After the green came back out, Haudenschild went high
around Swindell to take second and chase Saldana for the
lead. The yellow came back out when fourth running Smith
had a rock hit his spark plug guard and bend it onto his
plug, shorting it out and losing a cylinder. Smith
stopped on the backstretch, again slowing the field.
On the restart, Haudenschild dove under Saldana in
turn one, and drifted in front in turn two, bumping
Saldana's front wheel with his right rear while taking
the lead. It was a lead he would never relinquish,
leading the last 13 circuits.
With only ten machines running at the end, Frankie
Kerr came home sixth after starting 19th. Tim Shaffer
was seventh, followed by Ed Lynch, Jr., Todd Kane and
Craig Rankin.
Smith set fast time over the 46 car field for a new
Eldora All Star track record. Kerr won the ButlerBuilt
heat, Jeff Shepard took the United Expresslines heat
with Dale Blaney and Kevin Huntley the other heat
winners. The Commercial Truck & Trailer dash fell to
Saldana with the Arizona Sport Shirts C Main to Byron
Reed with the Outerwears Pre-Filters B Main to Dwain
Leiber. Chuck Scribner flipped in the C main, but he
wasn't injured.
