SCHACHT WINS 2ND ARCA POLE OF SEASON IN FOOD WORLD 500K QUALIFYING


TALLADEGA, Ala. -- Veteran Bob Schacht of Chapin, S.C., bested
13 ARCA Bondo/Mar-Hyde Supercar Series drivers who topped 190 mph
in qualifying for Saturday's Food World 500k and won the Talladega Pole
Award on Thursday at Talladega Superspeedway.

Schacht used a rebuilt version of the Engineered Components Ford
Thunderbird he used to win the pole position for the season- opening
Daytona ARCA 200 when he ran a lap at 196.013 mph around the 2.66-mile
oval. That bettered the 195.472 effort set early in qualifying by
hometown favorite Doug Reid of Hueytown, Ala., who drive the Long-Lewis
Ford. Reid ended up on the outside of the front row.

The effort was Schacht's 15th career ARCA pole and his sixth on a
superspeedway, one behind all-time ARCA superspeedway pole king Bill
Venturini, Talladega's ARCA track record holder. Schacht became the
first driver to sweep a season's ARCA poles at Daytona and Talladega
since Venturini accomplished it in 1987.

On Friday, NASCAR Winston Cup Series practice will be held from 11 a.m.
to 1:30 p.m. Busch Pole Award Qualifying for the Winston Select 500 will
begin at 3 p.m. Central Time.

Although reserved seat tickets for the Winston Select 500 are sold,
unreserved backstretch grandstand seats remain for Sunday's race.
They will go on sale at 7 a.m. on Sunday. Two-day infield tickets
will go on sale at 5 a.m. on Saturday. One-day infield tickets become
available following the conclusion of Saturday's on- track activities.

The starting lineup for the Food World 500k will be set in second round
qualifying at 9:30 a.m. No less than 48 cars are on hand to try to make
the field for the third round of the Bondo/Mar-Hyde Series. Round Three
of True Value Dodge IROC XIX will precede the ARCA race at noon on
Saturday.

TALLADEGA POLE QUALIFYING FOR FOOD WORLD 500K NOTES

BOB SCHACHT (#75 Engineered Components Ford) -- (Note: Schacht received
his Talladega Pole Award from winning the pole at Daytona in the Daytona
Arca 200. The joke was that they could now cancel qualifying since he
already had his trophy.) -- We ran pretty good in practice, but we
slowed down a bit in qualifying. It doesn't matter, though, we're on
the pole. I tried some things in practice figuring it might pick things
up a bit. Then, I changed it back but I didn't change it back exactly
like it was. The race is what counts right now. We'll make the car a lot
more comfortable now for the race. Today, I was really concerned with
the wind because it picked up and then it quit and then it would pick up
again. That might have played with my decision on setup, too.

This is the car we ran at Daytona. (On the rebuild after his Daytona
incidents). The only thing that's left of the Daytona car is the roof
and deck lid. We completely put a different body on it. We ran over some
debris at Daytona and blew a tire which tore up a fender. Then, we got
into something with another car. Rather than just patch things up, we
put a different body on it it make it better. Come Saturday we'll have a
very good car.

I think Doug Reid (outside pole) has a good head on his shoulders. He
drove one of my cars in a race last year. I hope he'll have a good race
on Saturday. I think he'll be smart and just settle back and see how
things are. When the pit stops start and things shake out, the race can
be a different story. The fastest car didn't win at Daytona. Honestly,
I've never run good here. I've run good at Daytona and Atlanta, but
never at Talladega. Maybe, Saturday will be a good day for us. I like
the track.

MARK THOMPSON (#66 Phoenix Air Ford) -- We had run some :38's in
practice. The way the wind and things are here, you never know what you
might run in qualifying. It'll be a top-10 time, I'm sure. I'm pretty
sure that we'll see Bob Schacht run somewhere near 48:50 for the pole.

DOUG REID (#05 Long-Lewis Ford) -- (On fast lap) We figured we could run
fast. We ran 195 here in December. Then, we were the quickest car at
Daytona in the ARCA test. We were quickest when we went back to Daytona
in February, but blew up our good motor before qualifying. I was fastest
in the second round. It was just bad luck. We were up to sixth in the
race and then got into a wreck. We're learning as we go. The motor
program is coming together and we're working hard. This is the same car
I ran at Atlanta last year. Our super speedway car isn't ready yet. I
don't know why this car is so good. It isn't supposed to. Whatever it is
with the car, we aren't changing anything. I'm getting better with more
experience and so is the crew. I hope the time is good enough to hold
up.

HARRIS DeVANE (#33 Highland Timber Ford) -- That's the best qualifying
run we've ever had. This is quite a car and it's going to be a good race
car. It's a Junior Johnson car that Bill Elliott raced last year. We
went to Junior's shop to pick it up and then we went to Dawsonville and
got an Ernie Elliott engine to put in it. We've got some combination
here. I feel good about it.

JEFF PURVIS (#1 Phoenix Construction Chevrolet) -- We ran good, but we
might have taped off a bit too much. We felt we should have gone faster.
This is the car that I won the race last year in.

JIMMY HORTON (#52 AC-Delco Chevrolet) -- We're not real happy with
our lap. We ran quicker this morning. I'm not sure what happened.
Something slowed down. We've got to look for it. We'll get racy now.
Hey, sometimes this time trial stuff gives everybbody a flase reading.

GARY BRADBERRY (#78 Big B Drugs Chevrolet) -- We're a little
disappointed. I thought we could run a bit quicker than that. It looked
like the Fords were really strong. We've got a good car for the race.
It's more a race car than a qualifying car.

KEVIN RAY (#2* Mississippi Motorplex Chevrolet) -- The car is running
great but we just need more time in the car so we can test it more. We
brought a new Monte Carlo here that we picked up on Tuesday, and we were
hoping to go a little bit faster. It had about
10 or 15 laps on it before we took it out for qualifying -- that's
all. This was not how we expected to qualify. We came off a fourth place
qualifying run at Daytona (for the February Daytona ARCA 200) and we
expected to do a lot better here. We need to gain a little bit more. We
haven't had an awful lot of time to work with the car.
