CAPE TOWN, ZA: Toyota pairing Serge Damseaux and Vito
Bonafede have taken a good grip on the chase for the South
African National Rally Championship by winning the Total
Autumn Trial, the second round of the series.

The pair backed up their win in the recent Natal-based
series opener by bringing their works Castrol Toyota Conquest
4x4 to the finish nearly seven minutes ahead of Brady
Dabner/Guy Hodgson in the Ermelo Toyota Conquest 4x4. For
Toyota the 1-2-3 was completed by Etienne Lourens/Robert
Paisley who drove a finely judged event to be the first
two-wheel drive car home, first in Class and third overall.

Damseaux took control of the rally after the fourth special
stage on the first day when he edged ahead of early leaders
Hannes Grobler/Pierre Arries in the Bankfin Nissan Sentra
4x4. When the Nissan went out shortly before the halfway
mark with a broken suspension it was all over bar the
shouting.

With top contenders Jan Habig and Douglas Judd (StanBrik VW
Golf Syncro) out on the first stage with a blown engine,
Damseaux and Bonafede (the reigning champions) were
presented with a relatively easy cruise to victory.
