McLaren International and Nigel Mansell today announced that
Nigel will not participate in the first two Grands Prix of the
season.
At the beginning of February, Nigel signed a contract to drive for
the Marlboro McLaren Mercedes team alongside Mika Hakkinen.
The team's recently launched car, the MP4/10, incorporated a
number of innovative features and had been designed prior to the
decision that Nigel would drive for McLaren. On Nigel's test of
the car at Estoril, he and the team realised that he could not
achieve a comfortable driving position in the car and that this
would compromise his performance.
Thus McLaren has decided to develop a new chassis for Nigel.
Once completed, it will have to undergo rigourous FIA structural
and impact testing and will therefore not be available until after
the first races.
Marlboro McLaren Mercedes has nominated Mark Blundell to
drive in the first two Grands Prix of the season, which will begin
in Brazil on 26th March.
