Circuito de Jerez 6th - 10th February
Total Jordan Peugeot left Jerez in southern Spain on Friday 10th,
February at the end of a five-day test session with the new
Jordan-Peugeot 195. Bad weather forced the team to return home a day
earlier than scheduled, but the test was still deemed a success by Total
Jordan Peugeot Team Manager John Walton. "Although the week was marred by
the weather conditions, we were still very pleased with the progress we
made" he said.
Eddie Irvine started off the test by completing a full systems check on
Monday afternoon, before work began in earnest on Tuesday. "One of our
principal aims was for the drivers to get properly acquainted with the
new car" explained Walton. "We also had a varied programme to get through
which included tests on the clutch control, gearbox oil and hydraulic
pump system, in addition to general set-up work". The team were happy
with the improvements made to the car. "We got some very positive
feedback, particularly with the clutch control system and the hydraulic
pumps" said Walton. "The gearbox oil system is progressing well too" he
added.
Peugeot technicians were also in Jerez carrying out development work on
the new 3-litre A1O engine. "We ran a slightly modified unit for the
first time" said Walton "and also tried some different water pumps and a
modified water cooling system. We were very happy with the performance of
the engines" he concluded.
Eddie Irvine completed 96 laps in total during the course of his three
days in the car, setting the team's best time of the week on Wednesday
afternoon. Weather conditions were dry and sunny when Irvine recorded a
fastest lap of 1'24.47 reaching a top speed of 217kph. Despite drastic
regulation changes designed to slow the 1995 cars down that compares
favourably against Michael Schumacher's pole-setting lap of 1'22.76 at
the 1994 European GP. "I was very happy with the time" said Eddie.
"There's still a lot more time to come from the car and a lot more to
come from me as well. At the moment I'm still trying to get used to the
left-foot braking" he continued. "Once I've got that sussed I'll be able
to make full advantage of the new 2-pedal set-up which we have on the
195".
Rubens Barrichello took over driving duties on Thursday, completing 46
laps during the course of the day as the team carried out some endurance
testing. "Unfortunately it didn't stop raining at all on Friday" said
Walton. "With more of the same forecast for the weekend, we elected to
cut our losses and return home early" he continued, "so Rubens hasn't had
the opportunity to do a quick time yet" That opportunity will come next
week when Barrichello travels with the Total Jordan Peugeot team to
Estoril for a three day test from 13th - 17th February.
