On his first test drive with the Tyrrell Yamaha Formula 1 team, Finland's 
Mika Salo performed impressively today, despite unseasonal rain storms
which swept across southern Spain's Jerez circuit.

The 28-year old from Helsinki completed 53 laps at the wheel of a 1994
Tyrrell Yamaha 022 powered by a 3.5 litre Yamaha V10 engine. Salo's best
lap time for the 4.428 kms circuit, which remained damp all day, was 1
min 29.87 sec, using an H-specification power unit as he familiarised
himself with the strange circuit.

"Mika did a very good job and we are very pleased with his feedback"
commented Mike Gascoyne, Deputy Technical Director, Tyrrell. "He made no
mistakes and impressed us with his calm approach in difficult, changing
weather conditions".

Mika joined Ukyo Katayama for the first of four scheduled days testing -
the Tyrrell Yamaha team's Japanese ace returning to the track where he
finished such a close 7th in last October's European Grand Prix.

This time Ukyo was putting more test miles on Yamaha's new 3-litre VlO,
1995 engine, fitted to a 1994 022 chassis. The engine performed
faultlessly all day and Ukyo logged 47 laps, recording a best lap time of
I min 30.33 sec. "Ukyo was working on the electronic mapping of the new
engine which showed excellent reliability and good drivability" concluded
Mike Gascoyne.

The Tyrrell Yamaha team will continue its intensive test programme
tomorrow, when dry but cloudy weather is forecast. Overnight, one car
will be fined with a more powerful K specification version of the
3.5-litre Yamaha engine and the other car will be fitted with 1995
suspension components currently undergoing development for the new 023
car.
