Alesi started Extremely fast and left Berger, Hill, and Coulthard behind. 
On Alesi's 1st pit he lost the gearbox, end of race for Jean as he
couldn't get the Ferrari into any gear.  Berger then inherrited the race
from Alesi, and did a good job holding off Hill and Coulthard, until his
first pit when he was pinned in by Panis in the Liger.  Berger finaly got
out of his pit in 3rd place, behing Coulthard and Hill.  Shortly thereafter
Hill passed Coulthard for the lead, where he stayed for the rest of the
race. Berger struggled in 3rd, until the last 6 or 7 laps when he started
pulling 2 seconds a lap on Hill and Coulthard. on the last lap he was about
3 seconds behind the 2 Williams' , then on the last turn of the last lap
(Curva Parobolica) Coulthard lost power, and Berger swept by into 2nd.
 
Notably fast were: Herbert in the Lotus (With the new Mugen Honda) Out on
lap 1, then into the spare Lotus with the old engine (Slow) and Katayama,
who was running in 4th just in front of Hakkinen until around 10 laps from
the end, when he went off into the tires.
