Senna ran in front of the first qualification session. There had been a
familiarization run on thursday, as it was the first F1 event at the circuit.
Williams used Benetton-style side deflector plates on Friday. Verstappen had
gearbox troubles. McLaren was troubled by overheating on Thursday and in the
morning on Friday. They seem to have solved this for the first qualification
session, but it cost Brundle some lost time in the session. Hakkinen tore up
the undertray on a curb, but still managed a decent time. Berger complained the
Ferrari had rear grip troubles and was chewing up its tires. Ratzenberger had
no time in the afternoon.
