AUSTRALIAN TOURING CAR CHAMPIONSHIP, ROUND 3, SYMMONS PLAINS, 13/03/94.
The touring car competitors arrived in northern Tasmania to a newly
renovated and upgraded Symmons Plains track complete with new pit
area and hospitality facilities. From personal experience, in past
years Symmons Plains had been falling farther and farther behind the
mainland tracks, and this facelift was essential to keeping the
event on the calendar in future. Congratulations to all involved.
The heats were conducted on a cold windy day, and as is becoming the
norm in the ATCC this year Mark Skaife dominated, taking maximum points
on race day, winning both heats and the dash. The hard luck story of
the meeting had to go to local hero John Bowe who had the extreme
misfortune to draw six for the dash after qualifying on pole. Such is
life... After a storming drive in the first heat Bowe was looking
even better in the second until the gearbox packed up to the crowd's
disappointment.
Another good day for Mark Skaife who has won all the heats to this
point. The two heats at the Surfers Paradise Indycar GP are not going
to be counted towards the championship, but the big V8's always provide
an exciting spectacle around the tight and twisty confines of downtown
Surfers.
