SENNEKER TAKES 3RD AT KAUKAUNA
September 8, 1996
Wisconsin International Raceway; Kaukauna, Wisconsin
Finished: 3rd Started: 7th (20.059, 96.914 mph)
After posting the fastest time in practice with a 19.854, as well as the
fourth quickest time, the Senneker crew knew they would have a good weekend.
In qualifying however, Bob was just 7th fast. At the start of the Wisconsin
300, Bob knew survival would be the key to gaining points on the leaders in
front of him, by lap 27 we were up to 6th and the car "felt real good" as
the crew talked during the 2nd caution. On the restart at lap 32, Mike
Miller who was running 4th right ahead of Bob got into a lapped car and as
he spun Bob clipped him with the left front fender, severely damaging it.
During the 3rd caution, the crew made the necessary repairs during many
stops under the caution flag removing the fender completely and securing the
hood and remaining "fender particles" with bungee cords and 200 mph tape.
Suspension parts were not damaged it was just cosmetic and aerodynamics that
were "challenged". When the race restarted at lap 41, Senneker was running
on the lead lap in 18th. During the next stretch of green flag run, Bob said
the car didn't feel "too bad", the toe-in wasn't really affected. When the
leaders pit we stay out to gain track position, running in 6th. During the
5th caution, we pitted for right side tires and fuel, we come out of the
pits running 13th. When the the 6th caution flies at lap 100, we pit for
left side rubber and to further survey the damage done on the left front,
everything is ok, when the race resumes at lap 105, we are running 13th. By
lap 117 we are 7th, 5th at lap 118 and 4th by lap 128. As the race continues
under green, Bob slides back to 6th at the 150 lap mark and rain starts to
sprinkle the track. The 9th caution waves at lap 195, as the leaders pit
along with Senneker we come out running 3rd. The green waves at lap 200 Bob
battles back and forth with Cywinski and Kenseth over the next 22 laps,
settling into 2nd place at lap 222. Bob maintains 2nd until Cywinski passes
him at lap 262, Bob is able to hold off a charging Mike Miller over the last
40 laps to salvage a great 3rd place finish, which is where he finished a
year ago in the inaugural ASA race at Kaukauna. Sprinkles were felt over the
last 150 laps, but it was never a factor until the crews started to load
their haulers, then the rains came, after the checkered flag. "The car was
pretty good even after we bent up the left front", said Senneker. "Once
again the crew did a super job fixing the car without losing any laps, were
vary happy with 3rd". Although Senneker finished ahead of all the point
leaders, he still sits in the 4th place, but gained crowd on all the leaders
with 5 races to go. After a week off, the ASA cars return to action at
Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Saturday September 21, the
race will be broadcast at 2 pm (est).
