The Kil-Kare experience starts early.......
Remember that last week at DuQuion, we lost the rear clip, fuel cell and
basically, everything behind the rear wheels. We have an excellent
fabricator in the area and he worked Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to get
the car back into racing shape. We picked up the car Friday morning, 5:30 am
and took it back home to install the fuel cell hookups, power steering, vent
tank for oil, etc.... not to mention that the rear quarters, tail, etc were
all bare metal. We covered the weld seams with tape and spray bombed the
quarters. It wasn't pretty, but we were there.
We left for Kil-Kare about 9:00 am and had a whole lot of work to do when we
got there. The setup was still for the dirt track. Springs, shocks, etc..
had to be changed. The rear end in the chassis was not square after the
wreck and needed to be reset. We ran out of time before practice started and
then we scrambled to get the car on the track. OF COURSE.. it handled
badly...real bad. Back to the pit, checking the rear for square. More
adjustments.
We were 7th out to qualify and didn't have a lot of time between practice and
qualifying. The car was REAL loose and I almost took out the front wall in
the qualifying lap, never recovered, qualified 19th.
We kept working at the car. We found that the panhard bar was flexing.
There wasn't much that could be done at the track, but this was the basis of
the car handling one way, then flip on the next lap. We basically fought
this problem the rest of the day.
The heat race went OK, and the car handled better. We kept up with our pit
neighbor, Don LaDuke during the heat so we felt better.
The race almost didn't happen due to weather. It began raining, but not hard
enough to soak the track. We started the race under caution to dry the track
and then took off.
The car handled poorly during the race. It was pushing badly, then was loose
and we began loosing ground fast. I could smell oil, but didn't see any like
you would if it was from the engine compartment. The crew said it was
smoking when on the brakes at the end of the strait. We were eventually
called in by ARCA to see what was going on. The oil was in the trunk area
out of the breather tank for the oil system. It may have been overfilled.
The oil was getting out of the trunk and onto the RR tire and brake rotor.
Another part of our handling mystery.
We avoided the wrecks, stayed out of the way, and finished the race where we
started... 19th. We felt bad about how the car (and the driver) performed,
but did accomplish quite a bit in getting the car somewhat sorted out. Our
next race is at Salem, IN..... we definitly didn't want to go thru what we
did at Kil-Kare down at the Salem Speedway. Its much too fast to be out to
lunch....
The next couple weeks, we will be fixing up the body and getting it looking a
little better, fixing our leaks and working on our setup. See you at
Salem...
