              Mark Kinser Completes San Jose Sweep

    SAN JOSE, CA (September 7) - One by one, three former Skoal
Outlaw Series champions tried to pass Mark Kinser in Saturday's
"A" Feature at San Jose Speedway. But Kinser - enjoying by far
the finest year of his career - was equal to each challenge and
completed his sweep of the $64,895 event.
    Mark's third double-feature sweep of the year gave him a
commanding 363-point lead over defending champion Dave Blaney in
the race for the 1996 World of Outlaws championship.
    "The last time I was here (1991), I made a big mistake and
let Steve (Kinser) pass me," Mark told the capacity crowd
following his 23rd main event victory of the season.
    Mark wasn't about to let that happen Saturday. Although Sammy
Swindell, cousin Steve and Blaney attempted to steal his thunder
during the final eight laps, Kinser kept the #5M Wirtgen Maxim
rumbling ahead of the field.
    Swindell caught Mark late in the 23rd lap, only to have the
engine in his #1 Channellock Gambler lose power. Although Blaney
signaled to Steve that his right rear tire was almost flat during
the caution period, "The King of the Outlaws" battled Mark for
three laps after the green flag replaced the yellow. "The Buckeye
Bullet" resumed the battle for the lead with two laps remaining,
but was 10 car-lengths behind when Mark took the checkered flag.
    "I wanted to come back here and win for Ray Williams," Kinser
said. "He's been with me for a long time. It's nice to win in my
wife, Cindy's, hometown, too."
    Kinser won his 26th Vivarin Dash of the year for the right to
start the "A" Feature on the pole. He burst into the lead as the
green flag fell in the 30-lap race, and opened a comfortable
advantage as the other 23 cars in the field jockeyed for
position.
    Steve steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim deep into the fourth
corner to pass Blaney for the runner-up spot late in the opening
lap. Jeff Swindell relegated Blaney to fourth place seconds later
with a low move through turn two. Stevie Smith took the high line
into the second corner to pass Sammy for fifth place the next
time around.
    Mark was a half-straightaway ahead of his closest pursuers
early in the sixth lap when Paul McMahan hit the outside wall in
turn two, flattening both tires on the right side of the #83 Beef
Packers Stealth. Jeff Swindell brought out the caution again
seconds later when he stopped the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim in the
second corner.
    Sammy started making his way to the front of the field as the
race resumed, taking the low line past Smith in turn three and
Blaney in the fourth corner. The 1983 World of Outlaws champion
battled Steve Kinser for two laps before taking over second place
during lap 11.
    Mark entered lapped traffic with a half-stretch advantage
midway through the race. Sammy and Steve narrowed the gap as they
battled for the runner-up spot, closing to within six car-lengths
with 11 laps remaining.
    Sammy's run at Mark two laps later took a toll on his engine,
however, forcing him to stop in turn one. Cousin Steve restarted
the race with only marginal air pressure in his right rear tire.
He gave up after being passed by "The Buckeye Bullet," Smith and
Randy Hannagan. Steve's crew replaced the flat tire after Lance
Blevins took the #21 Citgo J&J for a spin in the second corner,
setting the stage for a two-lap dash to the checkered flag.
    With a backmarker separating the leaders during the final
restart, Mark quickly opened a comfortable lead as the green flag
replaced the yellow. Blaney rode the rim to within 10 car-lengths
of the lead during the final two laps, but was unable to get any
closer as Mark snapped his two-year reign at San Jose.
    Smith's third-place finish ended a roller-coaster evening for
the EcoWater Systems team. After setting quick-time, he was
forced to race in the "B" Feature when McMahan passed him during
the final lap of the First Heat Race. Stevie won the "B," then
passed four cars in the main event.
    Hannagan, a former San Jose track champion, finished fourth,
ahead of Jac Haudenschild, Joe Gaerte, 17th-starting Andy
Hillenburg, Joey Saldana, Steve Kinser and Mark Monico.
    The next stop on the Skoal Outlaw Series' annual tour of
California comes Wednesday at Kings Speedway in Hanford. WoO
