TOURING CAR CHAMPIONSHIP

RICKARD RYDELL this afternoon (Thurs) boosted his hopes of 
finishing as runner-up in the 1996 Auto Trader RAC Touring Car 
Championship after smashing his own Donington Park qualifying 
record in official testing for Sunday's twin rounds of the 
championship.

Swede Rydell and his Volvo 850 lapped the Derby track in 1m 
36.615s, more than a tenth of a second inside the mark he set there in 
April. With four races remaining, including Sunday's rounds 23 and 
24, Rydell holds second place in the title fight, 19 points ahead of 
Renault's Alain Menu.

Menu posted seventh-quickest time today, just ahead of newly 
crowned BTCC Champion Frank Biela and his Audi. Second fastest, 
and top Brit, was Honda's David Accord, who edged out his team-
mate James Kaye by five-hundredths of a second.

Sunday's double-header will also see the fight continued for 
manufacturer championship honours: Audi leads the battle with 257 
points, with BMW second on 221 and Volvo third with 213.
