              Mark Kinser Dominates San Jose Opener

    SAN JOSE, CA (September 6) - Mark Kinser has made sponsor Ray
Williams proud many times in his career. He made Williams even
more proud Friday at San Jose Speedway - Williams' home track -
when he dominated the Skoal Outlaw Series' preliminary racing
program.
    Although Mark, who raced for Williams during the early 1990s,
hasn't raced in California in several years, he appeared to be
right at home at San Jose's semi-banked, 1/3-mile oval.
    Kinser set San Jose's one-lap record in qualifying, then won
the Vivarin Dash and led all 20 laps in the preliminary feature.
    "The Wirtgen Maxim ran well all night," Mark told the near-
capacity crowd from victory lane. "Drawing the zero kept me up
front in the Vivarin Dash. We never had any problems, and we're
in good shape for Saturday.
    Mark's 13.383-second qualifying lap sliced .079 seconds off
the one-lap record Randy Hannagan set last September 8th. It
marked the 16th time this season Kinser has set the qualifying
standard at a World of Outlaws facility and the 36th time he has
received the EcoWater Quick-Time Award.
    The luck of the Vivarin Dash inversion pill draw allowed Mark
to start the seven-lap race on the pole. His 25th Vivarin Dash
victory of the season gave him the pole position in the feature.
    Tyler Walker, Mark Monico and Jac Haudenschild, three of the
eight-fastest qualifiers in the 58-car field, had problems in the
Quaker State Heat Races and failed to qualify for the Vivarin
Dash. "The Wild Child" and Monico reached the preliminary feature
by finishing first and third in the "B" Feature, respectively.
    Mark burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the
feature. His cousin, Steve Kinser, passed six cars during the
first 1 1/2 laps before colliding with Andy Hillenburg in turn
four late in the second lap. The collision sent Hillenburg's #2
STP J&J flipping down the front straightaway and out of the race.
Although his #11 Quaker State Maxim suffered extensive front-end
damage, "The King of the Outlaws" raced back through the field to
finish third and earn one of the four automatic starting
positions in Saturday's Vivarin Dash.
    Mark raced away from the field as the green flag replaced the
red, and was 10 car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers when he
entered lapped traffic two laps later.
    Mark slowed behind a pack of backmarkers three laps later,
allowing Hannagan, Sammy Swindell and Fourth Quaker State Heat
Race winner Dave Blaney to narrow the gap. Swindell started
making a move toward the front the next time around, driving his
#1 Channellock Gambler past Hannagan for second place and
challenging Mark for the lead midway through the race.
    "The Buckeye Bullet," winner of the Skoal Outlaw Series' last
two main events at San Jose, steered the #10 Vivarin J&J deep
into the third corner to pass Swindell for the runner-up spot
with eight laps remaining.
    Although Kinser broke away from the lapped traffic and opened
a six-car-length lead during the 14th lap, his comfortable margin
disintegrated when Swindell collided with Duane Bonini in turn
one. Stevie Smith surrendered sixth place when he became involved
in the incident. After Swindell's and Smith's crews replaced
their flat tires, they raced back through the field to finish
ninth and 13th, respectively.
    Steve Kinser, winner of six World of Outlaws "A" Features at
San Jose in his career, passed Hannagan for third place as the
race resumed. At the same time, Jeff Swindell and Haudenschild
battled for fifth.
    Mark quickly built a comfortable advantage following the
16th-lap caution period, and was catching the backmarkers as the
white flag fell. Blaney narrowed the gap in lapped traffic during
the final lap, but was 10 car-lengths behind when Kinser took the
checkered flag.
    Hannagan, the Skoal Outlaw Series' 1995 Rookie of the Year,
finished fourth, ahead of Jeff Swindell, Haudenschild, 16th-
starting Brent Kaeding, Monico, Sammy Swindell and Joey Saldana.
