September 2, 1996
Minnesota State Fairgrounds Speedway, Minneapolis
Finished: 23rd Started: 3rd (20.008 seconds)
During practice Bob had the 25th quickest time at 20.463, but when it time
to qualify, he was the 13th car on the track and ran a quick time of 20.008
to post fast time until Mike Miller and Carl Miskotten knocked him off
later in the round. At the start of the race, the Bluebird maintained his
position until he moved into the 2nd place at lap 19. Bob runs in 2nd behind
leader Mike Miller, until lap 48 when Trickle and Raines passed him for 4th.
Bob got 3rd back at lap 57 and 2nd at lap 69. Miller has an 1.945 second
lead over Bob, but the the car feels "Ok". At lap 108, the lead is cut to
.777 seconds, the 3rd caution waves at lap 111, Bob comes into the pits for
right side rubber and fuel; he comes in 2nd and goes out 2nd. Right sides
show lots of wear, the green waves on lap 120 with the #84 running 2nd. The
4th caution waves at lap 131 and Bob dives down pit road for fresh left side
rubber, when the green flies at lap 136, Bob is 7th as some of the leaders
did not pit. At lap 138, he reports that he smells smoke and comes into the
pits. The crew springs into action under the rear end of the car as it is
determined that the rear end gears are stripped and need to be replaced. The
crew replaces the gears losing 19 laps in the pits then send Bob back out
into the race running 29th. The rear end gears consist of a pair; a large
and small gear, the small gear had the teeth stripped off smooth. Bob is
running as fast as the leaders on the track, at lap 184 he makes up one lap
on the track. Rain wets the track twice between laps 176 and 200 for two
cautions. When the 8th and final caution waves at lap 243, Bob gets fresh
right side rubber. As more competitors run into misfortune, Bob continues to
climb in the standings and finishes 23rd at the checkers. The winner is
Miller, Ted Smokstad, Tony Raines, Steve Holzhausen and Brett Bell. "The car
was fast and racy before and after we had the rear end problems", said
Senneker. "We were fortunate to lose only one spot in the points, but we
need to finish these races up front to keep up in the points ."
Senneker dropped from 3rd to 4th in the ASA points 88 behind the leader St.
Amant. The next race for the AC Delco Challenge Series is Sunday at the
Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna (WI) for the Wisconsin 300. The
