F1: McLaren press release on Marlboro 


Woking, 26th August 1996.  "Philip Morris Europe and McLaren
International announced today that they will not be renewing their
association following the end of the 1996 Formula One season."


Walther Thoma, President of Philp Morris' European Union Region, said:
"Although our association with McLaren ends after the last race of
1996, our Company remains committed to the support of Formula One and
other motor sports.  During our twenty three years of sponsorship, the
Marlboro McLaren team has had unprecedented success, winning nine
Drivers' World Championships, seven World Constructors' Championships
and ninety-six Grands Prix.  We are very proud of that record, and of
the association with McLaren which made it possible.  There comes a
time to reasses.  The only thing I can say for certain is that we will
continue to participate in Formula One in a meaningful and significant
way.  We wish McLaren renewed success in the future."


Ron Dennis, Managing Director, McLaren International, added, "Philip
Morris have been our staunchest supporter, and a consistent contributor
to our success over the years.  We are very proud of our longstanding
affiliation with Marlboro, and certain that the team will continue to
achieve the kind of success that made the Marlboro McLaren team unique
in the history of Formula One.  I want to thank all of the people of
Philip Morris througout the World who have been with us in our long and
productive relationship."
